gotta say it's kind of fucked up that edward called the kraken crew "the kids" and izzy ended up being the shield between edward's abuse and the rest of the crew. i found an interesting reddit comment about the parental aspect of it but izzy isn't mentioned as the maternal figure, which i (1/2)
I haven't seen a specific reference nailed down, but I think it conveys two things. "Son of the devil" is an existing phrase from the time that goes back to the bible, which we heard applied to Ed in season 1. So on its face it just stands for Ed presenting himself as the devil and the rest being gender-neutral sons-of-the-devil (i.e. dangerous and wicked) in their own right. But while Ed doesn't generally look at the crew as his kids, that metaphor is relevant in the first two episodes of season 2. Ed is spiraling, wants to die and is the head of the 'household' who is acting tyrannically and violently toward the crew - in large part because he wants to provoke one of them into killing him. He is channeling the other defining moment of his life, which was when his father's behaviour provoked Ed into killing him. Ed may not take a paternal approach to the crew on a day to day basis like Stede did, but in this circumstance, he's cast them into that role because that's how bad heads of the household die in his mind.
