My model for this is the way Final Fantasy 8+9 handle it. I'm not particularly worried about it, I don't think, since I've never had much difficulty following longer cutscenes in those games?

Experimenting with a totally different style of dialogue box - instead of always taking up the bottom of the screen, treating it more like a floating speech bubble w/ decorations to indicate shouting, inner monologue, etc.
