The tree outside my living room window, coated with ice. I'm in Atlanta. We don't see a lot of snow, but boy do we get ice storms.

I originally thought this was Kazar, but turns out it's a character from French comics and animated cartoons called RAHAN. I will have to look into this further. Art by Gil Formosa.

Well, this makes my day. That's the MARVEL COMICS Previews catalog, kids. And who is that on the cover? My favorite superhero of all time, The Man of Steel, Superman!

My favorite memory of Dallas was sitting at a con with James A. Moore and another writer who was working on a story.Jim and I weighed in on various ideas, and then Dallas, in his soft spoken voice, gave some thoughts on where the idea could go and I was like, 'Oh, right. Jack Ketchum. I forgot.'1/2

Started the morning watching the first in a series of 12 lectures on Charles Dickens’ London. Stumbled across it as part of ‘The Great Courses’ collection. It’s available as a subscription on Amzn Prime. Absolutely fascinating and I will watch further episodes as time permits.

Today on Pre-Ice Storm Theater, we'll be watching a Gene Tierney Noir and Noir-adjacent Double Feature. We figured we'd better get our movie day shenanigans in early.

It's a tradition among Robert E. Howard fans upon REH's birthday to read one of his stories and drink a toast to his shade. For my reading choice, BLOOD OF THE GODS, a tale of El Borak. As we know, I don't drink alcohol, so I raise a bottle of water to Two-Gun Bob. Cheers!

After Lancer went bankrupt, and before ACE started publishing the Conan books, this is sword & sorcery I read before I read Robert E. Howard's prose. I only knew Conan from the comics.

This is the beginning. My first exposure to Robert E. Howard and Conan the Cimmerian. Though cover dated March of 1974, this comic was actually on the spinner racks in December of 1973. Note that I got it signed by writer Roy Thomas. The signature is above the statue's shoulder on the left.

Pick up the nearest book. turn to page 42, post the second sentence:

"Conan, rising in his stirrups, smote downwards with all his immense strength, beating down the tulwar, and splitting the skull of the wielder."

From The Curse of the Monolith by . L. Sprague de Camp/Lin Carter.

"I remember
The dark woods, masking slopes of sombre hills;
The grey clouds' leaden everlasting arch;
The dusky streams that flowed without a sound,
And the lone winds that whispered down the passes."

Happy Birthday, Bob. From one country boy writer to another.

Today I read MOON OF BLOOD by Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp, and I think this one has a lot more input from de Camp than some of the others. It lacks Carter's headlong pace, and there's a lot of stuff about battle formations, historical weapons, and the sort of details that Sprague excelled at.

Some Conan oddities. I bought the two small hardbacks new at Barnes & Noble about 24 years back. No idea why Tor did a release of them about 2002 in that format.

The ACE Conan box set showed up at a Friends of the Library sale. First five books in the Lancer/Ace run.

I spent the first part of the day writing sword & sorcery and the later part starting a Gothic Horror yarn. Writing brings me joy.

THE HORRIBLE DR. HICHCOCK Finally gave this one a watch. I knew the not so good doctor was a necrophiliac, so wasn't sure what to expect, but being a 1960s movie, it's only implied, so nothing too icky. It is, however, INSANELY Gothic. Same people who made THE GHOST and some of the same actors.

I dreamed I was at a ski slope last night. I was skiing down the hill without skis, just on my shoes, and everyone was amazed at my skill because they didn't know I could fly...
