I think the problem here is that even the highly skilled artists are currently unemployed so I can't trust in that idea anyway because clearly it's more than JUST that alone. I think everyone works on skills forever and it's more about who is "easier" to get, aka "easy to work with"....

This is disgusting from an art director on linked who's trynna tell me "Complaining that you’re not getting favors is asinine". This is where we're at hun?
"I was the Art Director at Cartoon Network for both Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory, and I held the same role on half a dozen top-level shows at Nickelodeon, Henson, and elsewhere. From experience, I can tell you this: if you’re not the best, you will get passed by. You have to ask yourself, “Am I truly as good as the best I’ve ever seen?” If the answer is no, then—hard truth—you’re out of luck. So what’s left to do? Work hard to be an artist with something special enough to cause an art director to remember you." Me: "As an industry veteran, don't you think thats a problem with the industry with having these unattainable high standards for artist just starting out? You are trying to get new grads and self taught artist to compare themselves to 10+ year pros. The real problem is these studios not having the budget nor willing to train new talent to fit the mold. How exactly are artist going to be the best with no prior experience other than education?" Him: "Adam T., as an art director my job is to maintain the highest level of quality and talent — not to hand out charity. That said, I’m actually known for hiring people with zero experience if their talent is undeniable. The point is: the animation industry is more competitive than it has ever been. Complaining that you’re not getting favors is asinine. The only way to work in this industry today is to be good — and the only way to be good is to work hard and be brutally honest with yourself. And look, we all see how thin the market is right now. Even really good people are out of work. Young artists need to understand they should have fallback skills — real, blue-collar skills. Learn to weld. Become an electrician. Whatever it is, have something solid to stand on."

I hate explaining to people that I have been job hunting for a "normal day job" for a long time and that I kinda had no choice but to make my art a job and open commissions to make SOMETHING.
Some of us do get pushed out the general job market and art/ creative pursuits become our viable option.
