The EST Congress 2025 kicked off today with the Online Pre-Congress Day, featuring 81 speakers!

The 4th CTILS Symposium was held last thursday with talks and discussion in English, Chinese, Italian and Spanish.

Students from our MA programmes provided simultaneous interpreting, translated all the materials related to the presentations and provided live subtitling.

Well done to all involved!

"To the Verbal and Beyond: A Reception Study on the Limits of Subtitling and the Possibilities of Innovative Subtitling" argues that viewer understanding requires nonverbal elements to be translated alongside words.

Grounded in academic-industry collaboration, the first session on 17 April will look at subtitling music and be led by Francesca Bussey from Sky

'Clear Shadows' - with integrated and creative subtitles by Dr Ramos Pinto - was screened on Sunday.

In discussion after the film, the audience response to the subtitles was very positive and one person asked if we could have all films subtitled like this, so let's get to work! 🙂
