It's so great that many researchers are landing in Bluesky! Maybe it's a good time now for a quick self-intro😀 This is Jingmeng, a PhD student at the University of Groningen (@unigroningen.bsky.social @rug-gmw.bsky.social), working on the intersection of psychology and complex dynamic systems...

I’m very happy to share that my PhD thesis, Advancing the Analytical Tools for Understanding Complexity in Behavioral Science, has been approved by the assessment committee! 🎉
I will publicly defend my thesis on November 20th at 12:45😉 Looking forward to it!

Made it to @saa2025leuven.bsky.social (after 6 hours train from Groningen 🤣)
Too late for the registration today but I'm certainly at the right place! See you tomorrow : )

ICYMI: decision to cut 5 international bachelor psychology programs in NL poses serious threat to psych science nationally & internationally, given how much research conducted here has historically punched above its weight in terms of per-capita output.

Cutting international bachelor programs threatens psychological science » Eiko Fried
Dutch universities decided to throw international bachelor programs under the bus to appease the government. This is a terrible idea.

We believe these analysis tools can be a very useful complement to the simulation-based approach. We also recommend that future model builders try to start with a more comprehensive understanding of smaller models and build on it afterwards.

Following this workflow, we can see what exact characteristics of the dynamic functions lead to certain overall behavior of the system. We also showed that as long as these core characteristics are preserved, we can change the function forms and produce similar results.

We started with two variables, analyzed their dynamics and the influence of various parameters. After that, we also showed how to add more variables and parameters into the analysis step by step.

We used two formal dynamic models, the panic disorder model by Robinaugh et al. and the suicidal ideation model by Wang (@shirleybwang.bsky.social) et al. to show how to use these tools to understand why a dynamic system evolves in a certain way, resulting in interesting phenomena.

In this tutorial, we introduced an R package with a GUI that can perform phase plane analysis and bifurcation analysis for formal dynamic models in psychology.
