Ghostober Day 7: “Black Candles”

In which Copia takes an offering from a sibling of sin and uses it unthinkingly.

Inspired by Ghost Chapter 21: Is Someone Feeling Psalty?

A solitary black candle illuminates his room, a sibling of sin offering it to him in passing—jovial conversation interrupted by a grumpy older cardinal stealing him away for what he thinks was way more nonsensical than talking about candles and meanings. He had plucked it out of their candle array, the second one from the right. Random.

The candle wick is barely visible at this point, shrouded by a bright flame, a competition between oranges and greens. Soon, it's only the color lime that materializes. In the quiet of the night, thoughts veer towards his twin, his own flesh and blood whom he hasn't seen, still. The reason Copia is where he is now and is incredibly unhappy about it. Success ripped out of his cold hands, him being a showman, ripped off.

Seemingly, the candle answers with a flickering blaze. Fleeting.

'I've seen footage of this guy, he's not good... rips off my moves... that's my stuff...'

‘Every Papa before you said the same damn thing. Let's not forget, it's your brother we're talking about.’, echoes in Copia's mind's recesses, as well as the open invitation of meeting Perpetua, one where he'd shown brief interest in but allowed to hang in the air, ever tentative.

Newer thoughts of his twin's vague upbringing come to him, how Copia had known of his parentage belatedly, and if Perpetua even had family of his own at all. A mushroom that had sprung out from nowhere, he chuckles to himself—instantly the feeling is replaced by guilt. Perhaps his brother didn't have anybody at all, who's to say.

Shaking his head as if to rid himself of his own musings, the candle light beckons him one more time, only for him to stifle its light cast into a halt.

Bedtime.

At first light, his morning stroll is conveniently interrupted by the same sibling of sin as last night. "You never got to tell me what the candle was for. You must forgive the old man for cutting us off."
