i have a lot of people i work with in a day who struggle with english and will hold up a google translated phrase bc something is far too complicated for their limited skill. machine translation is not meant to replace authentic comprehension, just a tool to meet an end and should be treated as such

within the context of tourism travel, yes you should take it upon yourself to learn some of the target language.but it is very important to understand that for refugees and migrant workers, communicating a baseline is more important than a 1:1 translation.
