This may explain while I still had dozens of mosquitoes bothering me on a Lapland trip, despite it being early/mid-October already 😅

Wow, autumn-to-date mean temperature in Sodankylä, Lapland is currently a full two degrees (!) higher than the previous record.

In Sodankylä, records have been kept since 1908.

For our trip: a full battery (64 kWh Hyundai Kona) at departure from Inari and a quick ‘fill-up’ at a high-power station in Tana while enjoying lunch did the job. 🔋

(40 % battery left upon return, despite strong headwinds along the Arctic coast and temps around 6°C)

And that’s not counting the medium-power or Tesla super chargers.

EV driving well beyond the Arctic Circle is absolutely feasible.🌲🚘

Yesterday we drove this loop through some of the most remote parts of Finnish & Norwegian Lapland, yet EV charging wasn’t a problem at all. 🔋

High-power chargers ⚡️:
• Inari 🇫🇮 – 2× 300 kW
• Kople & Tana 🇳🇴 – 175 kW
• Utsjoki 🇫🇮 – 4× 200 kW

So this is pretty amazing - yesterday EarthCARE sampled Hurricane Humberto straight across the eye! The eye of a tropical cyclone is small so a direct hit is rare: this is the first time EarthCARE has hit one after over a year in orbit! (Showing here also VIIRS on NOAA-20 for context.)

Timing of the first frost is relatively typical, maybe slightly early in the current climate.

Windy day ahead tomorrow. One major factor is the powerful jet stream that facilitates cyclogenesis. Not so often we'll have 90 m/s wind speeds above us.

The summer as a whole was the 4th warmest on record. Note how the top 4 warmest years all occurred during the last 4 years.

Another extremely warm August on Svalbard. If it looks tame, that's only because last year obliterated the records.

PS. the current summer is on track to become the 5th warmest on record on Svalbard.

Substantially less warm than last year's, but note that up to 2020, a summer temperature like this was never measured.
Summer temperatures to date (1st of June - 22nd of August). Summer 2025 will likely be the 5th warmest on record.

Great study, and perfect timing - I was able to highlight your work in 2 presentations in Longyearbyen last week by showing this graph.👇

It tied in perfectly to my main message: Svalbard is losing it's polar climate.

The main message during my presentations in Longyearbyen last week: Svalbard is losing it's polar climate.

The timing of Schuler et al.’s new study couldn’t have been better: I could show this figure illustrating how last summer’s record heat will be the new normal within decades.

Do you remember last year's crazy summer temperatures on Svalbard?

A new study by Schuler et al., published this week, finds that by the second half of this century, summers as warm as last year’s will be normal, or even relatively cool.

I already found it surprisingly chilly this morning, but it makes sense now I see this!

A return time of >30 years, according to FMI's statistics. Quite impressive!

Very sharp cold front will arrive in the west coast of Finland tonight. The front is associated with wind gusts of > 20 m/s, heavy rainfall and possibly lightning.

In July Fennoscandia was hit by a heatwave similar to one that hit the region in 2018. In just seven years, similar events have become almost twice as likely due to increased global temperatures from 1.1 to 1.3°C.

Great to present our recent study on the record-warm summer of 2024 in Svalbard ❄️🔥, right in the climate change hotspot of Longyearbyen itself.

A full audience and great discussion afterwards at UNIS.

On Tuesday I’ll be giving a lecture to students of the Polar Meteorology and Climatology course.

The start of August has once again been exceptionally mild on Svalbard.📈

But still ~1°C behind 2024’s record 'schedule'.

A new record is unlikely.

Temps will drop next week, and the preconditioning isn't as 'favourable' as last summer.

📍Longyearbyen (Svalbard) | 1–12 Aug mean temps
📊Data: @yr.no
Graph showing average temperatures from 1–12 August at Longyearbyen (Svalbard). 2024 leads as the warmest, with the former record (2023) notably behind.

2025 is also extremely mild - second warmest for this period - but still ~1°C cooler than 2024.

While August 2025 will likely still end up very warm overall, cooler conditions expected in the remainder of the month mean it won’t reach the extreme levels of 2024.

I’m currently in Longyearbyen for a research visit, and on Friday I’ll present our work on the record-shattering summer and August of 2024 - and put summer 2025 into context.

Come join us at UNIS, lecture room Kapp Wijk, Friday at 12:00.
Graph showing August mean temperatures at Svalbard Airport (Longyearbyen). 2024 is highlighted with a red circle and obliterates all previous August records. The former record, set just one year earlier in 2023 and already 0.9°C above the previous record, was exceeded by another 2.6°C.
