Super impressed by the work on Wine (the windows runtime for linux). In particular the work on Bottles to make it easy to try different runtimes and configurations. But even more important the work by Sveinar Søpler on the support for Nvidia's CUDA.

What’s with all the portrait mode videos where people put subtitles that appear really fast, two words at a time?!

It’s incredibly unhelpful.

Back on Linux, PopOS with Cosmic Desktop, pleased to see High-DPI and variable framerate is well supported!

Nice Job @system76.bsky.social, defaults on Cosmic Desktop are pretty sensible and it seems incredibly stable for such a new environment.

Just discovered this, and I feel like it was the same for me regarding software engineering.

I was not particularly good at it but I learned how to figure things out, how to debug things, how to dive into thousands of lines of logs to find an error and get to the next one.

And I enjoyed it.
Back on Twitter, my most viewed tweet was a link to my "math pep talk"—a video I made for my students that now has 23K views 👀

There's a lot to expand on in that video, like structural barriers to success in math. But I'm sharing it again anyway.

What I find interesting is that in English ships and cars are females, mainly because men chose to do so, while in French it's pretty much whatever the Latin gender was.
I think about this tweet every day

If you're a new software engineer, learn your design patterns.

To this day, I find myself dramatically simplifying implementations and making them so much easier to test (without mocking the entire world) by refactoring into a pattern.

I wonder what System of a Down would write if they released an album these days. Probably a good mix between pure emotion and anger that would fit this period quite well.

When I'm sad I listen to "Lonely day" on repeat.
When I'm emotional but not quite sad I listen to "Toxicity".

I really want to be able to disable/enable reposts from specific people on my timeline. Instead I end up just unfollowing the heavy reposters that otherwise have actually interesting stuff to talk about.

You are not "more American" than the child of two undocumented immigrants.

Y'all really let racist South Africans and Australians and British people (who weren't even born here!) immigrate to the US, and then start making up new rules about who is and isn't American?

No.

It doesn't work that way

The concept of truthiness in programming languages is cute…. But definitely not worth the headaches.

A few days after the presidential election one year ago, we went to Fordham Road in the Bronx.

It was a little different last week.

Yes it was the content of domestic policies.

Do you think that you could convince immigrants that Trump is a good candidate for them, because yes, he gave $45 billion to ICE, but he also funded the IRA?🤡

Then why do we think Black voters would be OK with Biden giving $50B to cops, but funding IRA?
The problem with Democrats in the Biden era wasn’t the content of the domestic policies, it was the total failure to sell them and to understand, manage, and master the media environment, especially social media.
This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism.

The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.
