Originally, the character art for The Aeldstorm Saga was commissioned. That was the right call at the time. I needed art, I wanted art, and commissioning artists is good and cool actually. The art did its job.

As a writer, I was absolutely obsessed with page count when I first got serious about writing. Now I barely think about it at all. Hell, I couldn’t have told you the page count of Fractured Rune until I actually formatted it in Affinity Publisher. Word count is a far more accurate indicator anyway.
