Building the subway was not easy, and it was constantly in danger of being killed. It was not as simple as “government decides to build the subway, awards the contract, and it is quickly executed."

Do you have expertise in NYC history, gov, law, or policy? Do you want to teach others? Do you want to join a small cohort of teachers this fall who will be teaching rigorous courses to inclined adult students in the city? Co-teach this one, or let's talk about your own.
DM me.

Kenneth Jackson is the NYC historian. This fall, I will be teaching a Maximum New York version of his classic course at Columbia: "History of the City of New York".
Syllabus (which I'm reworking for my version): www.columbia.edu/itc/history/...
Desired: a co-teacher!
More info to come

Next week some evening I will teach an intro seminar on NYC’s rent regulation system. Very casual. No prep work. Just show up. There will be snacks. Probably in Williamsburg. We can also talk about gov more broadly at the end.
Comment/DM if you want the invite when it’s ready.

Hello—are you a community board member in NYC? Would you like to invite like 10-20 people to come and watch one of your committee meetings? I will happily bring a group of kind, interested, informed individuals.

Member deference is the
@council.nyc.gov tradition of always doing what the local council member wants during land-use decisions. If they want to reject housing, that means the Council will do so.
The result? A feudal system where each CM has control over their district’s land-use.
