The overreach of the Jim Crow regime in response to peaceful lawful protest brought it down

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

In light of Judge Immergut's ruling, there's a lot of noise today coming from the President's advisers and supporters about courts not having the power to provide prospective relief against domestic uses of the military.

Via "One First," me on the rather significant early precedent to the contrary:
181. Courts and Domestic Use of the Military
In response to adverse judicial rulings, the President's advisers and supporters are claiming courts lack the power to halt domestic use of the military. A critical early precedent is to the contrary.

A WILD ONE: A man broke his leg during an arrest by ICE at a car wash south of L.A.

ICE has held him under 24/7 guard at a hospital, registering him under a pseudonym, for *37 days* without telling him why.

A judge has ordered his immediate release.

Two people were murdered at a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews www.bbc.com/news/live/cx...

We’re facing a global crisis of antisemitism. Too many of us have feared news like this, especially on the High Holidays - it’s felt almost inevitable.

AOC: I think there's two things that are happening at once: One, there absolutely is an unprecedented abuse of power, destruction of norms, erosion of our government and our democracy in order to prop up an authoritarian style of governance

However, they are weaker than they look…

I've been thinking a lot about fear and courage these days. This passage from Game of Thrones gets at an important truth.

“Bran thought about it. 'Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?'

'That is the only time a man can be brave,' his father told him.”

I just spent a week in Portland. The city was busy with tourists and locals enjoying late summer. A prosperous downtown. Factually, there is no observable evidence of a city needing military intervention. A reminder that this is not normal. Please pay attention.

The brazen lawlessness. The corruption. The cruelty. These people are acting like they’ll never not be in power. That should tell you something about their plans.

Not to make everything about Jewish summer camp but this reminds me of the time my unit head at camp told all the counselors we had to have an emergency staff meeting after the kids went to bed so we rushed through bedtime and ran out of the bunk really fast and when we got there it was six pizzas

This is going to end up being the most pointless and expensive "this meeting could have been an email" in history.

It's important to remember when GOP Reps and Sens are yelling about the 'violent left' that they routinely tell reporters and colleagues how theyre afraid to do this or that because their own supporters routinely threaten violence agains them.
