Or, we could buy that new equipment, train the staff & either re-open or purchase new space in the court estate to deal with cases in a timely manner & work on bringing the backlog down. If that didn’t work, then there’s an argument for considering - reluctantly - the way we deal with cases.

What is the cost of the proposed new CCBD?. Seemingly it will require the training of additional court staff, purchasing of new IT equipment, the miraculous appearance of substantial numbers of defence solicitors & counsel (although who knows what rights of audience will be required?) 1/2
Jury trials could be scrapped except in most serious cases - BBC News
Only cases of alleged murder, rape or manslaughter will be decided by a jury under new proposals to cut court backlogs.

“It is really dangerous to make any criticism of a judgment without a full understanding of the facts and the law,” the lady chief justice of England and Wales said at her annual news conference yesterday.

So it’s not just the Conservatives who have a lack of respect for the rule of law & proper process. Seems Labour are on the bandwagon too.

Barristers, Judges, everyone with a simple understanding of the justice system would warn of this. Really could just say, Juryless trails not the answer. There, end of. This tired conversation is not the answer to the chronic issues in the system. @thecriminalbar.bsky.social

With some reservations, the answer appears to be “yes”: “I did find evidence that tags reduced the likelihood of reoffending – wearers were on average 33% less likely to reoffend (controlling for similar offence and demographic profiles).”

20% of courtrooms are closed today. Worth remembering that when people suggest restricting jury trials. Juries aren’t the problem. They aren’t causing the delays. They aren’t halting justice.

They can’t get in the door.
📈Today, 9 January 2025, 103 out of the 516 Crown courtrooms in England & Wales will not be sitting.
That's 20% of them.

I don’t understand why as a nation we have decided the failings of the #rail network are tolerable. Between cancellations & delays it’s shambolic. If another business ran this way it would be boycotted which we can’t as many need trains to commute. We pay a fortune for a system that regularly fails.

I have to agree with some of the posts I’ve seen on here recently. Appreciating the concern people have about Musk and Trump, they seem to account for at least 75% of the posts I’m seeing, even from non-political accounts I follow. A little disappointing really; trying to avoid both!

Next year will be a hugely important one for the criminal justice system of England and Wales. The government has asked for advice on tackling the current crisis by the spring. We should know by the summer whether the prime minister is bold enough to accept it.
