If you can substitute "hungry ghost trapped in a jar" for "AI" in a sentence it's probably a valid use case for LLMs. Take "I have a bunch of hungry ghosts in jars, they mainly write SQL queries for me". Sure. Reasonable use case.

"My girlfriend is a hungry ghost I trapped in a jar"? No. Deranged.

I just did my first review for #JOSS
joss.theoj.org

Extremely positive experience (summarized in Mastodon mstdn.science/@ChristosArg...).

If you are developing research open source software, strongly consider submitting to JOSS!
Journal of Open Source Software
Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS) is a developer friendly, open access journal for research software packages.

Exciting to be a part of the team introducing this to the world yesterday. Lots of work ahead of us, but a great team behind this plan.

Also, we're hiring! www.schmidtsciences.org/careers/

"Leveraging metrics to drive data sharing at the Science journals" (www.science.org/content/blog...), includes how @dataseerai.bsky.social measured data and code sharing in @science.org papers, compares with data from @plos.org and @tandfresearch.bsky.social, and says how Science plans to improve.

An update on AI use in open source software submissions to @joss-openjournals.bsky.social
We've shipped a major update to the JOSS submission scope requirements, affecting what is eligible for submission and what information we require from authors.

I've convinced myself this (www.inaturalist.org/observations...) is a Baltimore Oriole, not a Bullock's Oriole. Other opinions are welcome. #Birds

2nd and 3rd new bird species of the year today in Long Beach, CA, USA, thanks to eBird rare bird alerts: Grace's Warbler (here naturally) and Swinhoe's White-Eye (part of a rapidly expanding group of escapees in this part of the LA area)

Given the state & prevalence of LLMs today, I wonder if there's any value in student personal and research statements as part of grad school applications. When I read very similar statements from very different students, I find it hard to trust them. I also wonder about their recommendation letters.

I'm reviewing computer science PhD student applications over my "break" and am amazed at them. It's hard to find any that don't seem like they would be good PhD students, and they almost all have interesting stories and strong recommendations.
