Rewatch: LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (1945)
Gene Tierney’s performance as an unstable, obsessively jealous woman is stunning and unsettling in a film that is beautifully shot in Technicolor.

Her turn as a monstrous villain is quite possibly my favorite of her roles, tonight at least.

When only cheap sci-fi, old-school #horror will do: THE DEADLY MANTIS (1957)

An Arctic thaw frees a giant, prehistoric praying mantis that is angry and hungry.

Late-night, low-brow schlock for when you’re in *that* mood.

First watch: THE FURY (1978), an entertaining film despite a somewhat disjointed storyline.

Two teens with psychic powers on steroids are predictably exploited for political purposes—leading to, uh, explosive results.

Not bad but I think I would’ve liked it more had I seen it decades ago.

Endless summer = 47°, gray skies, bare trees, Bloody Marys, a great playlist and a fired-up grill.
It’s summer somewhere!

Gang of Four’s “entertainment!” album (1979) is a remarkable post-punk gem—an incendiary socio-political critique of capitalism with sharp-edged guitars and driving beats.

Top track (of many great tunes)

First watch: PORTRAIT IN BLACK (1960) is an over-the-top melodrama that I enjoyed on a guilty pleasure basis despite its numerous flaws.

Lana Turner is having an affair with a doctor who carries a syringe and cares for her husband.

What could possibly go wrong?

Phone rings:

Hello, I’m an automated customer assistant and I can understand complete sentences

Me: Good for you. Now put a real person on the phone

It: I’m sorry. I didn’t understand…

Me: But you said …

It: Let’s try this another way

Me: Ok, fuck off

It: Please hold
a black and white photo of a young boy with his hand on his chin .

Love seeing respect for this outstanding noir, #1 in the genre for me some days …

First watch: Out of the Past (1947), dir. Jacques Tourneur. A definitive noir for many, and it is easy to see why: private dick led astray by mysterious babe, Mitchum in a trenchcoat looking sleepy and chain-smoking, photography from Nicholas Musuraca, whip-smart lines, extended flashbacks. 1/2

Rewatch: ROOM AT THE TOP (1959), a superb British New Wave film with themes of class division, opportunism and moral decisions about love versus security.

Some truly heart-wrenching moments and a perfect ending.

Jack Clayton’s direction is exceptional with a first-rate cast.

My rewatch of I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943) was somehow far more rewarding than my past viewing.

Director Jacques Tourneur’s film weaves themes of voodoo, colonialism/slavery, sibling rivalry and a catatonic (as opposed to flesh-eating) zombie into an atmospheric whole.

Fun weekend getaway to Columbus, Ohio, with Marvin to visit friends.

The Short North Arts District (High Street) is a perfect place to stay for restaurants, bars, cool shops.

It was a sea of red Buckeyes attire Saturday for Ohio State’s football beat-down against UCLA.

And on the way out today …

Into You Like a Train roars like a locomotive threatening to run off the tracks—a thrill ride of fierce guitars, drums and sax.

Definitely on my list of top post-punk tunes, The Psychedelic Furs or otherwise.

TCM is showing at 1:15am a Hitchcock film I’ve never seen: BLACKMAIL (1929), billed as the first British full-length, all-talkie, which apparently also was released as a silent film.
I’m intrigued and setting the DVR.
Anything that expands my Hitchcock knowledge can’t be all bad!

Don’t be fooled by the slow, 1:14 start of dawdling guitar and sax.

The shift is sudden and strong musically as Richard Butler’s raspy vocals sort through ruins of a failed relationship to find answers.

That I can understand.”

1st watch: BERLIN EXPRESS (1948), first Hollywood production filmed amidst post-WWII Germany rubble, isn’t as riveting as the German film below, but a decent companion to it.

A multi-national group on a train seek a German peace diplomat kidnapped after a stop in Frankfurt.

Richard Butler once told Creem magazine that Love My Way was written for gays and people struggling with their sexuality.

His message: Don’t worry about it.

It still sounds fresh 43 years on—infectious chorus, gorgeous verses and a splash of marimba.

First watch: LATE SPRING (Japanese, 1949) is a lovely film that finds a 27-year-old daughter wanting to stay with her father to care for him in their happy home.

Yet she is pushed unwillingly toward marriage due to societal expectations and an interfering aunt.

Richard Butler’s sneering contempt for love matches fierce and furious music in this call for sex.

The punkest post-punk track on the Furs’ 2nd album.

I just want to sleep with you.”
