If the yard had been built in the Hollow, Hurricane Hazel would have destroyed it.

Again, environmental reasons. The tunnel was the best option. The TTC had designs for bridges and portals, but one thing that also changed things was potential flooding risk. hurricane Hazel taught them that.
February 9, 2026 at 11:43 PM
That was fought for environmental reasons, as well as the nuns at Loreto Abbey. Originally the TTC wanted to build Davisville Yard in Hogg’s Hollow, with a single track tunnel connecting it to Eglinton Stn. That too was smartly kaiboshed.

Originally the extension north of Eglinton was going to be a trench. Yeah, North Toronto residents said “nope”.

There was also a trench east of Broadview as well.

It was supposed to be built before Bloor but traffic patterns shifted dramatically in the 50s. When the Bloor streetcar was finally replaced it had been the busiest streetcar route in North American history.

Ok. I won’t……but they were.
February 9, 2026 at 11:19 PM
For rail it was going to be a traditional heavy rail subway to be built after Bloor, and then Queen. Yup. Queen….

Traditional trolley bus. A switch was in place at Avenue Rd, allowing 61 NORTOWN trolleys to go north, and there were wires along eglinton a good 500ft west of Avenue Rd. Every once in a while I was told a driver forgot he was operating NORTOWN and went through…oops…

A line was planned as early as the late 1950s. Nothing as built in part because Forest Hill had too much power as. a borough. Basically the same reason why 32 EGLINTON WEST never became the trolleybus route it was supposed to, thus orphaning 97 YONGE and 61 NORTOWN from the rest of the TB system.
