Again, environmental reasons. The tunnel was the best option. The TTC had designs for bridges and portals, but one thing that also changed things was potential flooding risk. hurricane Hazel taught them that.

That was fought for environmental reasons, as well as the nuns at Loreto Abbey. Originally the TTC wanted to build Davisville Yard in Hogg’s Hollow, with a single track tunnel connecting it to Eglinton Stn. That too was smartly kaiboshed.

Originally the extension north of Eglinton was going to be a trench. Yeah, North Toronto residents said “nope”.

It was supposed to be built before Bloor but traffic patterns shifted dramatically in the 50s. When the Bloor streetcar was finally replaced it had been the busiest streetcar route in North American history.

For rail it was going to be a traditional heavy rail subway to be built after Bloor, and then Queen. Yup. Queen….
