To fully commit to tribalism, people must be untied from the truth. Once they can say anything, they can accept anything, and then they can do anything.

Our job, friends, is to lash ourselves to the hard oaken mast of facts, and not be washed overboard.

I listen to and read many strong sources. None says things more important than does @davidfrum.bsky.social.

Erudite and humane, Frum asks questions but never lectures. And his rare advice, like “Don’t despair, don’t give up” is powerful because it is wisdom born of painful experience.

I suppose one could call it “the slow death of shame.” It is a very bad cultural development, but not yet complete in the United States.

Rich, you have to believe the Gaza genocide lie, to justify ignoring the hideous truth about the Palestinians: they have resisted peace from the start and plan to exterminate the Jews. That’s not imaginary, it’s public record.

If only as a matter of self-respect, you might look at the facts.

Some complain today that the kidnapped Israelis are called “hostages” while the Palestinians freed in exchange are called “prisoners.” Seems unfair, they say. “Words matter.” Well, this explains why the words are different:

A right wing Israeli, opposed to a peaceful two state solution, killed Rabin.
In all instances, the Palestinians rejected peace.
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
That is true. The old bastard is not wrong on this point.
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
As did the Knesset chair today. And DJT was actually almost excellent for the first 5 minutes of his speech, before reverting back into himself.

If you keep accusing me of saying things I haven’t said, you are going to win the imaginary argument inside your head. But then what?
Respectfully, we all need to do less of that. I wrote about this in 2014. Sadly more true now: davidkeithlaw.wordpress.com/2014/07/26/p...
Playing Tennis in Gaza
The Gaza strip is one tenth the size of Long Island, New York.  It is a tiny strip of sandy, rolling country bounded on the west by the Mediterranean, to the east by Israel, to the south by Egypt. …

No, that’s not what I said. The point is that whenever we measure the impact of a mortality cause, we have to subtract the standard mortality numbers. Back during the pandemic these were commonly referred to as “excess deaths.” If people quote statistics, they have to follow the rules of statistics.

@thomasav.bsky.social You’ve used misinformation to falsely accuse me of something. You should apply to work at the Gaza Health Ministry - you’re a natural.

If 70K out of 2 million Gazans died in 2 years, standard mortality would account for at least a third. Unless they are normally immortal.

The first 5 minutes of Trump’s speech to the Knesset was grandiose, but uncharacteristically generous, praising others for the ceasefire agreement. All he had to do next was sit down and bask in the glow. But he kept talking and became his usual unbearable self. The “off” button solved the problem.
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
There is a natural mortality rate. In a society of 2 million people - particularly one of the most obese places on earth like Gaza, 10-20,000 people will die in a year.

PS: Palestine is 27th out of 200 jurisdictions for obesity (top 13.5%). Source: data.worldobesity.org/rankings/

Let’s be realistic. The Palestinians can remain obsessed with destroying Israel, or they can build healthy & good society for their own people. Those are mutually exclusive choices: if they keep pursuing the former, they’ll never find the latter.

Which do YOU think is the better choice?
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
I can’t name one, but I can name six:
Rabin, Peres, Barak, Sharon, Olmert all tried to reach a two state solution. Yair Lapid, the former PM who may be elected again next year, also supports the two state solution.

The resistance, Donna, is on the other side of the table. These are just facts.

You care about Gazans like a farmer cares about his wheat - mowed down and ground up.

Hamas killed over 2,000 Jews and over 50,000 Muslims in this war. The “Islamaphobes” are the people who enabled them to do it, and who mourn Hamas’ surrender.
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
Who’s the “you” Donna? I’m a Canadian ex-Protestant.
(You see, it’s not necessary to be Jewish or an Israeli, to acquire accurate information.)
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
Israel accepted the 1947 borders and only went outside them to defend against repeated invasions (1948, 1967, 1973). The Palestinians have never accepted them and for almost 80 years have waged war to exterminate Israel. In the process, ironically, Israel has become far superior at warfare.

Jesus, “High” your moral compass has rusted: it is the definition of “indecent” to compare the current circumstances to the Shoah.
At the very least, ask yourself why you support the people who built the biggest and best bomb shelter in history (Hamas) but never let their own civilians come inside.

“What ‘genocide’ means to me”

Lima beans
Tomato juice
The Godfather Part III
Coors beers
Most tattoos on people not in the Navy
The Yankees
The Jays’ bullpen, half the time
Coconut water, all the time

And if I’m honest, most of the Solzenitsyn books I bought in high school.

The best network of bomb shelters ever built is below Gaza. The Gaza Govt never let their citizens use it.
Instead, Hamas left Palestinian civilians (women and children, mainly) on the surface as scarecrows and human shields.
Why don’t you blame Hamas for at least some of their people’s suffering?
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
Dear @crywalt.bsky.social: You owe it to yourself to examine why you have chosen the relentlessly, implacably misinformed position. Applied in your real life this approach could result in buying a house at Love Canal, or next to the nuclear waste dump in Savannah River, SC. Take care!

I hope a message is received. However, much of the boycott has penalized the wrong people, in “blue” states California, Washington & Oregon, which are not even indirectly responsible for Trump’s tariffs.
davidkeithlaw.bsky.social
If there is a “genocide” in Gaza, Hamas is responsible for it. And the Keffiyeh Klowns have supported them in it, every day since October 7, 2023.

(PS don’t worry, it’s not really genocide)
