Japan House in London has a wonderful exhibit right now featuring pictograms. The 3D renderings of pictograms are especially cool. (ends in a month, so hurry!) www.japanhouselondon.uk/whats-on/pic...

Does the news reflect what we die from?
The image presents a comparison of the leading causes of death in the United States for 2023 and the media coverage these causes receive from three news outlets: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Fox News.

In the footer, it notes the data sources, indicating that the information is based on media mentions from Media Cloud (2025) and death data from the US CDC (2025) and the Global Terrorism Index, with a clarification that values are normalized to sum to 100%.

But did you get the thrill of seeing the platform number only 3 minutes before departure and squeezing down the ramp with the crowd as the staff blow whistles at you? #euston

If you haven't already, check out Junko Tabei's book Honoring High Places. Very very good.

The differences between climbing books written by men and women is so stark. Most men's books are about great accomplishments and extreme risk taking. Books by women actually observe relationships, leadership styles, and thoughtful discussion on risk taking.

I just finished Freedom Climbers by Bernadette McDonald, which tells the story of Polish alpinism. It's so good! Politics, relationships, and great observations on leadership and ambition. Strong recommendation.

Design tip: stop using jargon

I used to think that using words like “cognitive load” made me sound smart.

But a lot of people don’t know what it means. So when explaining your design to your teammates, use simpler and clearer descriptions like:

Isn't pretty much every fascist cyberpunk novel about how people circumvent the cameras? Like these people haven't watched or read anything.

I didn't go camper but I just traded in the little BMW for a van (full electric!) too!

I don't know if I agree with the burger one, but I respect your bomb throwing.

One big takeaway?

👉 Public health software must put clinicians and their patients first. Often, conversations center on policy or software architectures, and the actual needs of patients, nurses, and doctors were sidelined. That gap is one of the biggest failings in public health tech today.

Along the way, I also contributed to digital tools for primary care in Rwanda and some of the most intense work of my life: COVID-19 response systems in the U.S.

Leading the Simple.org project is the most meaningful experience of my career so far. Today, it's used in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Ethiopia to help manage 6M+ patients with high blood pressure — and its lessons have shaped digital health systems in Nigeria, Vietnam, Indonesia, and beyond.
