Here's a big shock! The Cato Institute decried U.S. actions in #Venezula.
When a spokesperson for the likes of the Koch bros give Trump a thumbs down...what gives?
Not a complete mismatch. Cato aligns with right-wing on economic issues but left-wing on foreign policy issues.
Still....hmmmm....

"A journalist arrested in Canada for trying to do their job?"
Many others there bearing witness at Wet’suwet’en territory were also arrested & charged in 2021.
Surely the danger of allowing free reign to the RCMP & the like must be understood by now as we watch ICE in the U.S. & actions in Gaza.
In 2021, photojournalist Amber Bracken was on assignment for The Narwhal documenting tensions over the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in B.C. The RCMP arrested Amber while she was doing her job and held her in a cell for three nights. Learn more here: thenarwhal.ca/press-freedom/

Remembering revered Canadian author Margaret Laurence on the anniversary of her death in 1987 and the impact of reading 'The Stone Angel' as a very, very young woman.
Now much older, I think I should read it again. I expect it served 20 year old me well as a wise foretelling. Live large.

Typo aside in the original question, I am sorry for Mrs. Betty Bowers that no one from Canada was able to follow through on her request.
Are you available today?

Canada is not likely next in line because of oil but...competition for fresh water IS on the horizon. More so because of AI needing it for cooling N. American data centres. Capitalism is more concerned about that than they are about agriculture ... or #peace for that matter.
Visualizing the Countries With the Largest Proven Oil Reserves
Today, the top 10 countries hold 1.5 trillion barrels of proven oil reserves, but actual production varies widely.

The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on #Venezuela expressed grave concern over the human rights situation in Venezuela following the US attack & capture of Nicolás Maduro.
Failure to address Maduro's violations invites false 'justification' for a power grab?

Rogue state hits Venuzela with illegal aggression, big time.
Unequivocably off the rails for any decent behaviour, at home & internationally.
Too bad that state is just across the border from Canada.
Sound our mental sirens louder, fellow Canadians.

How many in the 'western world' pay any attention to attitudes towards #climate change outside of the G7/EU bubble?
Japan is in the G7 but do they bring much on behalf of others nearby in their hemisphere?

Inspiring that the labour song “Bread and Roses” was sung by Lucy Dacus outside City Hall ahead of Zohran #Mamdani's swearing-in as New York City mayor on Jan. 1. May he make progress on his admirable goals. Expectations are high.
Judy Collins sings it here.

Well, there is this to consider...we are seeming to go backwards regarding #democracy. Less than 100 years to reach the peak. How fast can it decline, I wonder. ourworldindata.org/grapher/peop...

First day of 2026. Here in the north, the sun rose high enough above the trees to shine in my front windows at 9:00 am, flooding in warmth.
It is time for all to .... RISE UP

'Happy New Year' will be said tonight in many places where English is spoken & similar wishes made in other languages, elsewhere. But are we all on the same page?
"There is a growing recognition, however, that #emotions can vary systematically in their meaning & experience across culture & language"
Emotion semantics show both cultural variation and universal structure
Analysis of the terms used for emotions across a sample of 2474 spoken languages reveals low similarity across cultures.

Voices were heard. Funding restored for Women and Gender Equality. Heartening.
In 2025, Women and Gender Equality Canada faced an 80% funding drop, but women fought back. The Carney gov't announced sustainable funding for gender equality orgs across Canada. The next fight? For funding to end gender-based violence. @kjscott.bsky.social www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

I must say, I agree heartily with George Monbiot's terms.
The use of the phrase "the environment" has always bugged me. We only have one planet - all life has nowhere else to live. It is not 'THE' environment - it is 'OUR' environment. WTFU!!!
