This, I think, is something nintendo has shown to be more adept at implementing in big open world games - the ability to constantly run into new areas or discover new abilities that take the gameplay in a lateral direction.

The inverse happened to me with BOTW. I kept engrossing myself in the world, finding new shrines and leveling up skills, and discovering weapons at what felt like breakneck pace, but never felt burned out. Every time one idea was expended, it was onto the next...
