Hi I'm Delaney, I have been a video game artist, art director and technical artist for over 27 years including D&D Online, LOTR online, Dragonage, Stellaris, Unreal Tournament and more- plus films like Where The Wild Things Are.
I am a proud #transgender and intersex woman.
How about John, Paul, George and Ringo?
Some older miniatures, due for eBay. Could do with @delaneyking.bsky.social help in correctly naming these.

To change the vibe of your #TTRPG session, rename hitpoints to "Doom" or "Fate" and damage to "onslaught" and "peril".

Rather than being these huge sponges for damage until you run out of hit points, you face the relentless onslaught of your enemies until you meet your doom.

Unless you want me to advise people not to take that medicine when they are a kid?

I can't! I don't have a clear shot to the turkey! Get the turkey to move further away from the hostage.

Cool story. But irrelevant.

Now, note that all these attacks have done, say, 6 damage. But as the player doesn't know their HP, that 6 damage is proportional to their approaching doom. So you go from easily dodge to "okay, now you feel the pain".

Later "you wince as the savage blow umbeds itself into your brestplate, crumpling the metal and the force of it making your teeth rattle."

Later "in horror, you helplessly watch the blow tearing through your armour in a spray of red" You feel the breath of the death maidens upon your neck".

The GM has to change the description to hint at how little fate they have left.

Early on it is "he swings a savage blow but... you easily avoid it".

Later it is "he swings a savage blow, and you narrowly avoid it.

Later, "he swings a savage blow that rakes deep gouges in your armour"

It could be in all of us for all we know.

Now, to clarify, resting should recover a little to your fate, and your dreams/nightmares may hint at your state of ruination, but it shouldn't just top you all the way back up. Allow room for other acts to have need.

Throw virtual money at Delaney King's face hole in the form of a coffee. Down with capitalism- but in the meantime we all gotta eat.

This HP system makes priests make much more sense - their healing spells are more about ensuring the blessings of their Gods. Insisting on decent burials and honouring the dead, blessing food, and generally, yunno, behaving like priests.

Visiting shrines/ sacred places is basically topping up HP.

See Brian's brilliant comments about player specific omens- so a character hears and sees ill omens to remind them about their hidden HP score.
November 25, 2025 at 1:14 AM
All this is brilliant.

I think this needs to be made into a game.

Changing words can help set tone, de-mechanical feel your mechanics, and cause player experience and behaviour to change.

Having your HP as a mix of mystical force of luck/fate reframes the nature of HP.

Especially... and this is SAVAGE... if the players do NOT know their current DOOM score. You may hint at them having a "bad feeling" or a "sense of impending doom", but they never quite know until they visit mystics.
November 25, 2025 at 1:08 AM
Doing things to please the gods rewards you more fate, or holds off your doom. If the weavers of your destiny are not pleased with you, your doom may be close at hand.

This thinking changes player behaviour from slurping health potions to encouraging story acts such as burying dead PCs and NPCs.

I personally see hitpoints as the resource of luck, parrying, dodging and blocking and the hand of the Gods, not your meat soaking force.

For me, your luck runs out and then you are "open" to being injured and then killed.
