Contrary to some confused commentary, hidden trade barriers in the EU single market are nowhere near a 45% tariff.

The good news: Europe has integrated remarkably well.

The bad news: it also means there are fewer low-hanging fruits left to boost intra-EU trade. cepr.org/voxeu/column...
No, the EU does not impose a 45% tariff on itself
A recent paper which has gathered significant attention estimates a 45% tariff equivalent of intra-EU border costs. This column argues that this estimate is likely too high and depends on the particular dataset used and specific estimation choices. Therefore, it also vastly overstates the barriers that are akin to tariffs and could be lowered as a result of European Commission policy decisions. Instead, it argues that there are more urgent reforms with larger potential benefits, such as boosting EU innovation capacity and R&D spending.

At this rate, the upcoming December package on the Industry Accelerator Act and the automotive package could end up being the most consequential EU industrial policy move in years.

Today’s Omnibus vote has rolled over an already perforated cordon sanitaire in the European Parliament. For the first time, the EPP sided with far-right groups on a file key to the Commission’s agenda. Make no mistake: this was no accident and it’s unclear whether the centrist coalition can recover🧵

Incredible how fast the EP has shifted. Recap many a uni essays debating whether Parliament could effectively hold the Commission and member states to ESG and rule-of-law goals. Now, the EPP is opening the avenue for those foundations to be undone.
Today, the conservatives (EPP) passed a major piece of EU legislation with the far-right groups in the EU Parliament, marking the breakdown of the cordon sanitaire. The EPP, under Weber, has decided to sacrifice long-term principles and stability for short-term political gains.

Reminder also that there is a clause in the German coalition agreement excluding cooperation by the coalition partners - SPD and CDU/CSU - with parties that are unconstitutional, undemocratic, and right-wing extremist "on all political levels". This would include the EU level.
It’s something we’ve witnessed for a while. In Germany, Weber likes to give the impression of a moderate conservative, also compared to others in his party, but in Brussels he then goes and cooperates with the far-right
