Who am I - 2025 pt 2 (Sci-Fi)
After 50 years of wrangling electrons through tubes, transistors, gates, & chips, writing code and running a business, I retired a short time ago to write stories. I've completed three novels that will likely never be published and am still writing—still learning.
Also, in a past life, I was the guy that created and maintained the Halomaps.org website for the Halo Custom Edition Game and ran a boutique website design and hosting service called UXB Internet.
Another night of no new words. I just fixed and replaced old ones. I have got to stop reading the news for a while.

Going into 2026 like…

In Carter's World (#WIP), Jason's point of no return is when he slides off a mountain in the exclusion zone, shatters both legs and one arm bad enough they have to be amputated. Since he can't use the renew/regrow drugs his limbs are replaced with MECH appendages making him a disfigured pariah.
What’s the point of no return for your MC in your book/wip? What changes then so fundamentally they can never be who they were again? #WritingPrompt

What's a book—or series of books—that you loved as a kid that almost nobody seems to read or even remember nowadays?

I read and still have 31 of the 33 books.

Are they really podcasts if they are on video?

I got a good start on my new short story, but the news has been a real bummer, killing the flow. I am never very cheerful this time of year. It's cold, there are anniversaries of people I've lost, and the yearly reminder of my mortality. it's difficult to be witty when all you want to do is scream.

Money no object...
A full length feature movie complete with action figures and full size plushies of the Carter's World cats. Oh, and a lego set of the space elevator and the Odyssey.
If money was no object, what sort of merchandise would you make for your book? #WritingPrompt

We can do that here. We just don't.

Those were the days.

Tis the season of death. I won't be merry. On the anniversary of the twenty six shot in Newtown, CT, I hear about two at Brown university and eleven on Bondi Beach in Australia plus all those wounded and maimed. All by a gun.

That we have become inured to these routine deaths disgusts me.

I cut a chapter I loved about Jason's parents in the second revision of Carter's World. It made the story tighter. I took out two worldbuilding scenes as superfluous in the 3rd revision. I still need to cut 4k words from the novel in the next revision. Darlings will be killed.
What’s something you’ve been too stubborn to cut from your WIP even though you probably need to? #WritingPrompt

Never forget.

I don't normally have problems naming characters in my stories. I imaging what they look like and search for somewhat unique but memorably names that fit.

But now I am stuck naming an independant space cargo freighter for my newest story. It's driving me to distraction.

I am open to suggestions.

My circle of readers is so small, counted on part of one hand, that my favorite comment is "I read it."
What's been your favorite comment you've ever received on your book/wip? Was it a gushingly positive review? Critical feedback that helped you improve your work? #WritingPrompt

I took a walk on the dark side today and indulged myself to a fast food place for lunch. The first (and last) time this year. Everything is so much more expensive and of lesser quality, right down to the tissue thin napkins.

I was saddened that for the young people around me, this is normal.

Post a book you love from the 80s. No explanations, no reviews, just covers.

If this doesn't represent the stupid time we live in I don't know what does. I'm going to laugh about this for weeks.
It took me a second or two, but then I laughed WAY too hard at this one. 🤣

The Old Man's Legacy

A retiree awakens to find he's the only one left alive after a silent apocalypse. What he uncovers while searching for his siblings will change the fate of those who survived.
Time to eat your vegetables again y'all! What's a one-sentence elevator pitch for your book? If you need help, [thing] meets [thing] is a great baseline. #WritingPrompt

Say it again and louder.

"Defendant's (Donald J. Trump. et al.) position is contrary to the law."
The first paragraph of Judge Breyer‘s opinion granting an injunction in the California National Guard case is a banger.

In the Carter's World novels, since it's a tidally locked moon orbiting a gas giant in a binary system the only seasonal change occurs every nine years when the UV emitting red dwarf secondary star makes close approach.

In The Old Man's Legacy, he endures a nine month winter in Connecticut.
How do the seasons function in your book's setting? Is it similar to our world? Do they have different meanings in-universe? #WritingPrompt
