I want to say about 8 years ago now, I was stuck writing through a section of a story I was working on where the main character was treated as crazy when he was actually seeing an evil entity.

And one of my closest friends to this day suggested I randomly throw in a purple llama.
What's the strangest thing that's inspired something you've written? A flower inspiring a character? A food inspiring a scene? Etc. #WritingPrompt

So... one of my characters, Cryognellia, has the weirdly overpowered ability, and the inspiration is even stranger.

She has honey-kinesis. Basically able to perform hydrokinesis but with honey instead. That combined with her Insectopathy...

I've had random thoughts like "bowling balls are cool colors" then written characters. I am a weird lil pantser.

This giant needle I found in my grandma’s sewing box! I know probably leather workers are familiar with that size but to me, who had only ever seen sewing needles, I was like 😲

And then it ended up inspiring like 50% of the magic system in my book + several plot points & a tragic backstory

Exterior setting descriptions. I miss them a lot. Town and street stuff.

And clothes, actually. It's fun detailing how people are dressed, it's good for characterization, but I don't use it as much as I should.

I tend to just launch into scenes at a point that isn’t optimal for describing the surroundings and I have to go back and figure out how to work that in. It’s not the best approach from that perspective.

I fuck up the weather continuity all the time, it's one of the biggest things I need to keep an eye on when I edit

Accidently slipping into another character's POV. That level of revising is a sneaky joy.

i'm sooo bad with describing scent and sounds usually. when i picture a scene in my head it's through a very visual and cinematic lens

I forget people have facial hair. Characters show up in my head with all kinds of other variety baked in but not a one has had facial hair. Going to try to consciously fix that 😅

I forget that I frequently do this thing where I put down every gesture I can possibly think of, and always need to do an edit pass before revisions where I go back and "pick one" because not all stage directions are important, actually

I'm pretty bad with names, so I need to use them for a while before they're committed to memory. This goes extra for side characters who haven't shown up in a while, especially during their second appearance.

I used to have an illness in Runner Owen that, if survived, left the victim allergic to magic.

It's a bit complex to explain here in full, but it wasn't a mild allergy either. Full on throat closing, unable to breathe, 'you will die if you don't get away now' stuff.

I'll try it again someday.

The Beyond has a habit of twisting people's bodies into strange shapes, but whether this presentation is the illness itself or a symptom of something larger depends on who you ask. Where does the disease end? Where do you begin? That's a question each character has to answer.
