This is great, and echoes with some things I wrote in a devlog for DESERT OF ASH: davisgsee.itch.io/desert-of-as...
If you see sexual content in art and jack off to it, great, that’s a value of its own, one that isn’t worth demonizing. But I believe that seeing depictions of sex, even purely pornographic ones, can be edifying even if it doesn’t hit in that way for you. When we see art about love, about friendship, about labour, about struggle, we are able to take something from that, to see ourselves in it, to see ourselves as part of the human experiment—and to see others as part of that same experiment, to see them as more real, as being different from and the same as us. The same goes for sex. When I watch a gay sex scene, I may be aroused, but even if I’m not, I am seeing part of my life reflected back at me. On the other hand, lesbian sex scenes aren’t arousing for me, but they remind me of the ways in which people different from myself live in the same world. The above is true for anyone, but especially so for queer folks, who are so often excluded from the world, who desperately need to see themselves, and be seen, as part of it. We do not deserve to have parts of our identities locked away and hidden.
