At the time, most fans were hoping for something more like they later got with Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the last few years, a couple have made fan edits in an effort to remove that camp.

Have you had a chance to read many of the novels? ARe you reading pulps, one of the reprints, or ebooks?

Happy Birthday, John! The pulse-pounding world of Doc Savage was greatly shaped by magazine editor John L. Nanovic, whose vision turned pulp into legend. #docsavage #pulpfiction

docsavage.org/john-l-nanov...
No person can ever be certain for what they will be remembered for, if at all, but Nanovic as editor and prime mover of such nostalgic titles as The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Avenger. Nick Carter, The Skipper, Pete Rice, The Feds and Crime Busters has secured his own niche of immor tality in the minds of those who’ cherish that aspect of popular culture that was represented by the pulps and particularly the hero pulps.

Thinking of zealous Savageologist Rick Lai on his birthday.

Respected pulp historian, fiction writer, and chronologist best known for his detailed work on classic pulp heroes such as Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Avenger, Rick Lai was born on this date. An expert in the interconnected mythologies of pulp and adventure fiction, Lai authored numerous articles and stories that explored the hidden links between popular characters of the early 20th century.

Among his most notable contributions is "The Adventures of Doc Savage: A Definitive Chronology," his groundbreaking expansion on Philip José Farmer’s chronology. He organized the entire Doc Savage saga into a cohesive and plausible timeline. Drawing on clues from the original pulp novels, Lai reconciled inconsistencies, cross-referenced historical events, and connected the Doc Savage stories to a broader pulp fiction universe. The chronology has been widely praised for its depth of research and for offering both longtime fans and new readers a structured way to explore the Man of Bronze’s many adventures.

Definitely correct re: Doc Savage. Raised to help humanity, he spent a few years as an adventurer before the novels started, but it was in The Man of Bronze were he got his wealth. Twice in the pulps it was threatened, but he didn't lose it.

No future Doc Savage film will include the aides as they were originally written. They were useful over 181 books in the 1930s and 40s, but not in a single movie. The characters will be rewritten. (As they were in the Shane Black (et al) script. And that isn't a bad thing.

At the time the original Doc Savage adventures were written, there were 48 states in the United States of America. (Hawaii and Alaska were added in 1959.)

Of those 48 states, can you guess which never had a mention?

It took an incredible amount of wealth for Doc Savage to do his work. Where did he get his money? It was gold from the Valley of the Vanished. #docsavage #pulp #adventure #gold

docsavage.org/valley-of-th...
“As you all know,” he said at last, “only recently did we learn that my father had discovered a lost city built by Mayans in the Valley of the Vanished in present-day Hidalgo. Chicahua and the others belonged to that enclave, whose ancient gold mines now fund our operations. This was my father’s greatest secret, which only his untimely death revealed. He refused to touch that wealth, reserving it until the time I proved myself worthy of its use.”

“Did you ever discover any clue as to your father’s motivation for training you as he did?” wondered Ham. — Skull Island by Will Murray

So many people have built collections they're now hard to find, but look to Doc Savage groups like the Flearun (on Facebook), our site, and such. People are always posting indie bookstore finds, sets for sale, and offers to trade. Good luck!

Shane Black on his Doc Savage script's status: "Are people willing to spend the money it would take to bring ‘Doc Savage’ to the screen on an IP that is less recognizable to the American public or public in general?" #docsavage #pulp #shaneblack #film
Shane Black on the status of his Doc Savage film

“We have a script, but part of it, I love Doc Savage and I think we have a good script. It’s very expensive.

And the thing about Doc Savage, I mean, if you ask your viewers, because I know it, do kids today know it?

Are people willing to spend the money it would take to bring ‘Doc Savage’ to the screen on an IP that is less recognizable to the American public or public in general?

I mean, it was the original right? I mean, Doc Savage was named Clark, and he was a super man; then, they had a Superman named Clark after that. So this was the OG. ‘Doc Savage’ was the original.”

I've seen a few, but you're correct. Most of the old pulps are lost to time.

However, if you're looking for the Doc Savage novels with the original illustrations, they were reprinted. And you can find the ebook text of those novels many places. For example:

They started by publishing the novels they thought would do best (after the first of course) and then it had to do with length and Doc's changes after editor Nanovic left. (The Devil's Playground was a rare jump in time to see fan response.)
