“The Petty King” is finished. Coloured pencil on hot pressed paper. The bird is a goldcrest, whose Latin name is regulus regulus :) #birds #birdart
Coloured pencil drawing of the stone statue of a dog with a crown-shaped collar and an uplifted paw. A small brown and yellow bird with an orange crest is perched on the paw.

Nice artwork! This is very unique, and I can't get over the texture.

Day 4 -- Acorn

One of the more misleadingly-named seasonal fae found in the Fallows, the prolific thimble-sized "acorn spiders" are actually crustaceans.

I don’t normally get too many clear shots of Blue Jays, but this guy was so locked in on the sunflower seeds he didn’t seem to mind me snapping away. #Thursjay #birds
A Blue Jay perched on the stem of a dried out sunflower with a seed just visible in his mouth.

Completely randomly for me, I've only seen a few. Though both were in storage areas. That paper photo was like 15 years ago 😆

Gotta love these tiny guys! Awesome sculpt.
These are two I found, compared to notebook paper and a quarter.

I tend to be out of the loop with well known artists, and I've only recently seen the wildlife art of Bob Kuhn. Incredible color and simplicity while still displaying a strong knowledge of the subjects.
"Velvet Removal" a moose scratching his antlers on a tree, rendered in vivid but still lifelike colors. "Not this Time" a detailed jaguar pouncing an egret in a loose jungle setting. "Shady Spot" a coyote sits in the shade surrounded by a brightly lit scrub land. Fur and vegetation details are implied through smart brushwork. "Hit and Miss" a dynamic scene of lionesses hunting antelope, with a focus on a lioness reaching into the air at an even higher jumping antelope.

I'm thinking on making a reference pack of mushroom 🍄 for artists.

Are there things I should take into account? Different angles, species, light?

I'll do my best to make a nice variety - but also bit bound to what I encounter ;)

In honour of last night's beautiful moon.

The second picture has words by Maya Angelou.
"If you're always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be."

If you enjoy seeing my work, I'd love it if you could show your friends who are on here too. Thank you 😊

Mine is too I believe.. Which sounds nice but in reality, like you said, it means you get a steady stream of bots. I have no idea how many active people follow me, but it's surely not 15k humans.

Lol she would fit right in as part of one of those slightly off old paintings

Inktober Day 5, "Deer": The Peryton is a creature which first appeared in the "Book of Imaginary Beings", inspired by medieval heraldry. Though they appear as seen, they cast the shadow of a human, their preferred prey. According to D&D, they particularly enjoy dining on the heart of their victim. 🦌

I started this piece a good while ago with just the line drawing. The board was put aside and then moved about, getting a bit abused. I challenged myself to fix it and finish it. It’s finally done. Almost. 😂

My friend Todd’s paper on cassowary casques was published in @amornith.bsky.social’s journal Ornithology, “Species-specific casque shapes in the genus Casuarius and implications for visual display.” He had me do the scientific illustrations for the paper 😊

New #paleoart posted to #Patreon: woolly mammoths around a duck-filled lake. Accompanying the hi-res and WIPs of this image is a discussion about mammoth colour: the uniform red-brown mammoths of classic palaeoart seem unlikely now. Check it out at www.patreon.com/posts/night-...
#fossil #sciart
A herd of mammoths, with three large individuals up front, and lots of smaller, more distant individuals in the background, surrounding a shallow Pleistocene lake. They stand on browning, yellowing grass in front of a blue, partly cloudy sky. The mammoths are variable in colour, some being dark, some pale. A juvenile mammoth, blonde all over, has broken ranks and started chasing mallards around a pond. He has made a little grebe nervous. Why has this baby mammoth started attacking other species? Well, animals are a lot like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they’ve had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks.
