A double page spread in the Daily Express! As well as looking at the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, I also discuss some other reigning queens, including Ranavalona I of Madagascar and Margrete I of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Female kings have always been a rarity, an oddity, or an undesirable outcome. Across the globe a male ruler was preferred to a woman, with female inheritance vanishingly rare and frequently disputes. In spite of this, women have secured crowns - or fought for them - over several millennia

Delighted & honoured to hear that I have been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society! @royalhistsoc.org @donaldwin.bsky.social @ospreypublishing.bsky.social Image: the c 1300 town seal of Dover. It depicts a ship about to get under sail & reflects some of my work in #MaritimeHistory.
A red wax impression of the town seal of Dover, c 1300. It shows a ship about to get under way: the bow is to the left, the stern to the right. Inside the hull, two men stand in front of the mast, working the bars of a windlass in order to raise the anchor. The steersman is near the stern, his hands on the large side rudder, while above him a sailor is climbing up the standing rigging behind the mast to unloose the sail. The ship has three crenellated defensive structures - the forecastle at the bow, the aftercastle at the stern and a small topcastle near the head of the mast. Dover is one of the Cinque Ports and a flag hangs from a staff in the aftercastle, bearing the arms of the Cinque Ports - the front halves of three lions, each with a back that consists of the stern of a medieval ship. There is also a streamer or vane at the head of the mast, blowing left, which would have revealed the wind direction. Two trumpeters stand in the forecastle, their trumpets evidently announcing the ship's imminent departure.

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:

I've written a piece for The Bookseller on the AI and Copyright consultation, discussing why the opt-out model is completely unsuitable for protecting our creative industries and calling people to action through three simple steps! Please take a read!

A call to AI action
The government's consultation on AI and copyright must inspire action from everyone in publishing.

It was a fascinating, invigorating morning, exploring the possibilities and dangers of AI to the future of the novel. And lots of excellent company there too!

About to spend the morning in a focus group on AI. I’ve already done two consultations in February on the issue. It feels like an insurmountable mountain to climb, and we are only a small press, but thankfully we are not alone. 💙
