Also MAN I wish Hecate's secret wasn't just an easter egg and was actually incorporated into the main plot. It really re-contextualises a lot of her interactions throughout the game.

This all leads to an ending the feels very abrupt and mimics beats from the original game with absolutely no finesse.

The one thing I will fault 1's story on is that the side quest take way too long to get off the ground, to the point they can be considered post-game content.

And 2 is just as guilty of that.

And man, for a game revolving around the titan of time, there's not a lot of time shenanigans going on.

I thought the game would've taken place within a time loop to fit the roguelike structure but maybe Supergiant considered that low hanging fruit.

I also much prefer 1's narrative payoffs you get from successful runs compared to 2.

In 2 you're rewarded with fanservice and jangling keys more than any meaningful character writing.

As a result there are many elements of the plot that are either unexplored or relegated to the post game.

What caused this discord between Chronos and his children? What is the doomsday weapon the Olympians keep alluding to? What was even the point of wrapping the fates into this?

It doesn't help that the story then also has to juggle the surface runs. And while this part of the game has some cool levels, great bosses and kick ass music, it is a complete detour in the narrative and saps even more screen time from Chronos.

Papa Hades makes for a great antagonist because he's not just the final boss, he's an NPC you're frequently interacting with in the main hub.

Chronos on the other hand is almost exclusively found at the end of runs and gets very little screen time to trade barbs before the resolution of the story.

If you told me this game was written before hades 1, I would probably believe you.

It feels like a first draft that falls into many pitfalls the original story managed to account for.

As much as this sequel tries to shake things up, it feels more like a side grade to the original, which is still a quality product.

Narratively though? This is a step back from all the things I liked about the original setup.

I find it hard to make any comment on Silent Hill F's story without going-

-then she's still trapped by those expectations.

I feel the first playthrough says everything it possibly could about the horrors of marriage in a very upfront manner, so I don't mind the true ending taking a different angle though I understand how the latter can be seen as undermining the former.
