Duke entered bearing ribs, but it was Anna who did the dishing out, calling her lover out on his cover-up, her disappointment palpable, until he abandoned his limp attempts to maintain his lies. "All right," he growled, with a heretofore unseen ferocity. He recounted how he'd linked up with Sonny in an effort to protect her, protect them. Her moistened eyes betraying her heartbreak, Anna reminded Duke that he'd promised to let the police (her domain) handle things. "What have the police done, Anna?" he challenged, more gently; he knew he was hitting her where it hurt. She recoiled, stung at his jab at her competency. Duke continued to plead his case, explaining in a gripping monologue that he needed to reclaim his power, which had been sapped from him by those long years away from her in a Turkish prison, by Faison, by Julian and even by Anna's frequent acts of Duke-related hero-ism. "I'm through with being rescued by you, Anna!" he declared, growing more strident with every word. "l want to be the man that I was before, that's what I want!" Somehow, Buchanan managed to seem both at his most forceful and his most vulnerable, the toll his imprisonment had taken on him penetrating every syllable. This had a devastating effect on Anna, whose anger gave way to compassion as she assured him of her love. "I don't need you to fight Julian," she implored. "Anna," he replied with equal conviction, "I need it." But when it became obvious that there was no point in continuing the charade, his demeanor changed, his gentle nature giving way to a long pent-up anger. True Confessions "All right! Damn it!
