I’ve been reflecting on the border between #Detroit and Windsor. Since 911, through COVID, and now, it’s often seen as a barrier. I see it as a seam; connecting nature, industry, and cultures. My #urbanstructurediagrams explore the most unique cross-border urban relationship on the globe.

3-4 story buildings hit the sweet spot: often cheaper to build, resource-efficient, and endlessly adaptable. They can fit almost anywhere, from main streets to side streets to neighborhood streets.
Just do this. All the time.

Not a surprise at all.
Toronto Study Highlights Underreporting of Cyclist and Pedestrian Injuries.

“The findings, published in the journal Injury Prevention, suggest that relying solely on Toronto police data provides only a fraction of the picture.”

The future of urban mobility is about reimagining cities as prioritized systems where people, places, and mobility modes coexist. Cars no longer dominate; mobility-systems-based design puts human needs above vehicle dominance in a multimodal network.

Color is actually a form of architectural detailing. Just as craft-oriented as ornament itself.

I’ve always said paint isn’t architecture. But, I’ll admit, colour is crucial. It shapes how we experience buildings and places. It can be bold or subtle, dramatic with lighting or calming in daylight. Often, colour can make or break the success of a space.

A lovely evening at Windsor Eats for a book & poetry reading. Four authors shared works on oil, culture, relationships, sex & self-care—each with unique insights, enriched by the stories behind them. Left with my next read, OIL. Thanks to Biblioasis for hosting. #literature

Lighting is a vital yet often overlooked part of architecture and public space. It can amplify detail and articulation or highlight scale and materials in simpler forms. It can transform how we perceive and experience places. #lightingdesign

A productive morning at The Congregation, a Detroit café in a reimagined church near the ’67 riot epicenter. A staple of historic #BostonEdison it shows how #thirdplaces and #adaptivereuse can extend a neighborhood asset’s life and reinforce community life.

The architectural world lost one of its heavy weights, Sir Terry Farrell.

It was his use of the diagram, and in particular colourful diagrams, to communicate design concepts/ intent, that was most influential on me.

He had a way of capturing the essence of a project using bold gestures and flare.

Divisive politics will always went out in a populous world. That’s because you have a villain (the others) and you have a hero, the defender of those being (supposedly) oppressed. Politics of inclusion and shared benefits doesn’t work in today’s society. Sad state.

There’s definitely much to learn from these kinds of examples. I’ve seen similar in Tokyo and Shanghai. Makes me think about the potential of what’s happening on Geary Street in TO. These can become quite interesting, diverse, beyond just destinations, turning into livable organic neighborhoods.

Street festival? I’m in! A beautiful night yesterday for the end-of-the-month Night Market. Food, music, games, artisans, all against the backdrop of giant warehouses and industrial bldgs. A reminder that #events are the lifeblood of cities. #WindsorCanada

3–4 story #mediumscalemediumdensity, mixed or single use, buildings are affordable to build, resource efficient, flexible, and perfect for filling gaps on urban streets. They’re scalable to corridors and neighborhoods. Just do this. Everywhere. All the time. #parkintherearinternalorexternal

How do you keep an old historic market fresh in the face of competition from newer “food courts“?

It takes a mixture of old traditional vendors and new contemporary vendors, keeping up the authenticity while also keeping up with the times.

The neighborhood pub. Sometimes it’s loud, sometimes contemplative, sometimes both. From debates to trivia nights, it can be a true third place, just like cafés, offering community beyond home and work. A vital piece of urban life. #urbanism #thirdplaces

The new Apple Store in Detroit reminded me of Dieter Rams, Braun’s legendary designer and a major influence on Apple. Known for minimalism, clever use of materials, and even playfulness, his work spans from audio equip to shavers to my fave watch. A timeless ethos for any designer.
