Translation is often used as the prime example of automation. These stories by @bcmerchant.bsky.social show what a complex panorama this paints and how translators' worsening working conditions can teach us about the impact of AI.
bcmerchant.bsky.social
Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality.

This is how AI is killing translation work:
AI Killed My Job: Translators
Few industries have been hit by AI as hard as translation. Rates are plummeting. Work is drying up. Translators are considering abandoning the field, or bankruptcy. These are their stories.

In today's #Translation MA #Writing #Bootcamp, our students shared strategies for academic work and research design.

It's inspiring to see their ideas evolve and how recognising shared challenges creates breakthrough moments.

We create spaces to support them and help them support each other.

This week, I spoke with one of the Duolingo contractors impacted by its 'new' AI strategy, and they clarified that

1) it's not new. Duolingo has *already* fired an estimated 100 writers and translators.

2) they worked for months training an AI system that still makes egregious mistakes.

Hopeful me trying to frantically tie loose ends before actually packing for the holidays. You can do a week's worth of work in a day, ain't it?
