The text on my cover photo reads:

"Never give up the fight for freedom and the truth"

Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko, murdered 40 years ago in Poland for his pro-Solidarity activism, and battle against extremism.
Utterly bizarre.

Beyond parody.

That's really sad. Can you try her last known address?

My teen would tell you she's the new "in thing" 😉

They're bringing Trump's policies here wholesale and not even hiding it.

It would be great for kids' language development. I'd do some market research first though 😉. I struggle to get my teen to write thank you cards, never mind letters.

I looked it up and I think it was the International Youth Service.

Yes, there was an organisation that paired people up and our school used it to help with our French. Can't remember now what it was called. I found this penpal through Smash Hits magazine. Pretty sure she was looking for friends in the UK who shared her music tastes, and that's how it all started.

It was on BBC2 and it was called Reel Stories.
February 10, 2026 at 7:17 AM
Aw, thank you.

I haven't watched it but it keeps cropping up. I will check it out.

It was on last Saturday night, iirc and I think it was on C5. Worth watching though. After that they showed his slot at Glastonbury a couple of years ago.

I seem to be very nostalgic these days, esp about music. There was a lovely programme on TV the other night about Rick Astley, being interviewed by Dermot O'Leary. RA washed over me at the time, but I appreciate now how talented he is - not least as a drummer. It was eye-opening.

Another banger from the very talented Marsh Family 👏
Here’s a weeknight quick turnaround 🎶parody on the UK fallout linked to #EpsteinFiles #PeterMandelson's friendship with him, and the bigger implications ... we chose song #mrsrobinson from #thegraduate about vice/virtue!

5. For anyone remotely interested this is the title of the album
愛がなくちゃね。
It includes a lovely duet with David Sylvian (of the band Japan), in English.

4. I can't describe how happy it made me. Transported back to another carefree lifetime, and away from the shitiness of today's world.
Makiko Otsuka if you're out there, get in touch. I've tried to find you over the years on social media with no success. Thanks for the music..

3.Then yesterday evening I was messing around on a streaming service and looked the singer up. The first track I tried, from literally hundreds, was my favourite song from the album! From there I was able to download all of it. It couldn't believe it. 45 years on.

2. I could sing every song in Japanese though I had no idea what I was singing. During a holiday in Japan 25 years ago I tried to find the album in a music shop but with no title it proved impossible. I thought I'd never hear it again.

1. Back in the early 80s I had a penfriend in Japan. We shared a love of music and she sent me a cassette tape of an artiste called Akiko Yano - descrbied as the Joni Mitchell of Japanese music. I played that tape to death, and eventually it broke or I lost it or something.
