Distributed Systems PostDoc in Vienna, Minecraft Modder, Vegan, Open Source Enthusiast
It's time to acknowledge, Distributed Systems has a toxic reviewers problem.

Every time I get a paper review back that clearly indicates the reviewer did not even properly skim the paper I resent the way we do peer review a little bit more.

Such an amazing time to look for a job being a postdoc.

落ちる means to fall, not only can you see a person falling from the platform in its kanji. But you can vividly imagine the ooooo sound while they're falling (ochiru)

I'm currently studying japanese because I like to suffer and I'd like to share my fun little memory tricks.
(you can look up the writing yourself)
"tada" in japanese means "free", because magic was necessary to make it free. And because the magic trick looked simple, it also means "simply".

Started doing vocab cards on Anki for Japanese.
After a week now, I feel 15 new Japanese words/Kanji a day is maybe a bit much though =D

With my Japan trip coming to an End today I can say, Vegan in Japan is a lot easier than it seems initially. It's hard to try to have a vegan western breakfast outside of the big cities. But easy to get really yummy vegan food almost everywhere.

I'm enjoying studying Japanese on Duolingo, it's tickling my brain in a nice way.

Doesn't @icdcs2025.bsky.social have a process to get a 4th reviewer when opinions between the other 3 diverge strongly?
(I.e. one reject vs two weak accepts).

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”
Yesterday many thousands of federal employees were terminated. This is a Reddit thread for federal employees that got laid off.

Fed up with Google bowing to Fashists?
Hit them where it hurts. Get another search engine (Ecosia, DuckDuckGo) and get an ad-blocker for Youtube and other sites that host Google ads. #golfofamerica #google #fashists

Not that it's unexpected, but how fast the capital is bowing to Trump-Fascism is quite scary.

Minecolonies reached 60m downloads today, which is both satisfying because it's a large round number, but also because it happened on January 1st =D I wish that would count for academia applications 😅

My 1 wish for 2025 is that people stop "both sides" discussions when it comes to politics and recognize the existential thread the right poses, both to democracy but also to our ecosystem, compared to the pretty much non existing political influence of the people left of the avg social democrat.

I can not count the amount of times people emphasized how "local" they are buying their stuff without looking at the bigger picture of what exactly they were buying.

'Overpopulation' Is A Racist Trope. It's Time We Laid It To Rest
A new movie satirises the myth that climate change is a consequence of too many people. In the real world, our overpopulation obsession must be euthanised.

It's nice to start seeing some of the Computer Science crowd over here as well, I was afraid too many would stay behind in the bad place.
