The unspoken (out loud) challenge for NATO is that the US is no longer overly interested in the defence of European member states.

If the US-Russia deal on Ukraine happens, Europe is less secure. So, the US is now acting against NATO interests for very short term goals.

They are leaving Ukraine to slowly exanguinate because the prospect of escalation is so frightening.
