Fueled by TV based medical dramas, some patients enter the health space slinging #lingo that might not be as precise as they think it is. Our job? Clarify their meaning, and if possible, find plainer/common language.

Clinic.
6 year old: I'm a healthy!
Me: Yeah, you have a fever, too!
Kid: I'm sick but I'm healthy.
Me: Right. You have a cough and a virus, but I think you'll be ok. Home to rest and recover.
Kid: See? I'm sick but I'm healthy.
Me: You got it, kiddo

3.5 yrs: Hey, can I have that?
Me: My stethoscope-seriously? How will I be a doctor then?!
3.5: Gimme it. I'll put it on. And then I will take care of you.
Me: That is about the nicest offer anyone could make. Deal! Here you go.
And yeah: She took great care of me

Some #patients are perfectly happy to keep their relationship with their #doctor a clinical one...and that is all right.

Some children are very concrete, or they are prone to misinterpreting our instructions...but mostly work from an aim to please or to help. Being a Pediatrician requires keeping a sense of humor, and learning from the mishaps that keep our job interesting. #pedsky #graphicmedicine

PSA by Dr Killjoy? Perhaps. Just the same: please spread the word that it is both a bad idea and inappropriate to blow up glove balloons in an exam room. They are not toys. They are costly. Most of all: They can pose some serious risks, esp with younger kids. #pedsky #graphicmedicine

Just because one does not leave a clinic, urgent care, or ER visit with a prescription for antibiotics does NOT mean that good care failed to happen. In fact, it may be exactly what one needed. (Meaning: Antibiotics do NOT treat viruses, and good supportive care can help). #graphicmedicine #medsky
