Pediatrician cartoonist parent in search of the intersection of humor with everything (and everyone), mildly obsessed with complex care, canoeing and the animals of our lives.
What would you hear from the Oracle of the Obvious?

#Pediatrics Field Notes 4. The Shushing Multitasker. A newer aspect of of the modern clinician involves competing with the attention of parents (or patients) who will take and complete a call during an encounter. #grpahicmedicine

Pediatrics Field Notes 3. The Patient Experience Survivor. Incensed by parking fees, hassled by traffic, & tipped over by lengthy -revisit surveys, these parents are (understandably) done before you begin. Toolkit: the milk of human kindness, empathy, flexibility & focus on the kid. #graphicmedicine

#Pediatrics field notes 2. The Doorway Side Eye people: That subset of parents who haunt the room entrance, glaring at the clinician in a belief it will hasten their departure from the clinical area. Pro tip. Might backfire. Tools needed: Taskmastering, focus on the kid. #graphicmedicine

#Pediatrics Field Notes 1: The OnTime is Late Ogre. That parent who arrives 45 minutes early for an appointment, is roomed a bit early, but is fed up with waiting when you walk in bang on their originally scheduled time. Required: Caffeine, Positive Attitude, focus on the kiddo. #graphicmedicine

It is sad when kids get sick. It is amazing how little people can rebound to better health so quickly sometimes.

Think again. #Teens offer a LOT MORE savvy about #AI than a lot of us adults realize. They have a lot to tech us.

Some of our patients manifest their emotions intensely, even visibly. We do best when we work with them, letting them be seen—and neither ignore nor dismiss them. We’ll all be better for it.

Never underestimate the power of a great #SenseOfHumor as a cornerstone of resilience and coping. Or perhaps as a sign of an Old Soul or true wit or both.
Laughter is the best medicine; we should prescribe it more. #graphicmedicine

New “tools” arrive all the time to enhance medical care - the question remains: do they add value? Or just noise?

Fragmenting #healthcare is something we’ve gotten really good at here in the US. Perhaps it is something we could market, or even, ask their patients how they want it?
(PS we need to do better on this front. Not kidding).

Definition: Optimist. a person (or, say, dog) who tends to be hopeful/confident about future success. As in: “I am an optimist that this entire tasty morsel will fall into my clutches to result in a fine meal.”
Loony or not, it’s a worthwhile philosophy (& maybe tasty)
