Delighted to have a chapter in ‘Playing the Archive: from the Opies to the Digital Playground’ out now (open access) from UCL Press. This is a personal creative
/ critical one for me, exploring family history, cities, archives, memory, modernism and… hopscotch… uclpress.co.uk/book/playing...
Playing the Archive
Playing the Archive: From the Opies to the digital playground reflects on a major study inspired by the work of citizen scholar folklorists Iona and Peter Opie. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Opies built...

YES! Locking this down in my diary right now… ✊

That’s interesting. Where are you in the alps?
drmichaeleades.bsky.social
Good points and it’s not a straightforward issue. For me, it’s a conversation issue. Overcrowding on mountains and ‘wilderness’ areas just massively degrades them. In a different way there are similar issues in the Alps or even in the Lake District!

It’s a bit of a misleading headline. From the I know the base camp treks are relatively advanced and not to be undertaken lightly, but very different to attempting to climb the mountain. The people on there have been very unlucky. I do agree that the whole area is generally over touristed though.

These are not people climbing Everest. They are doing one of the base camp treks in Tibet.

Running into a table whilst pretending to be a T.Rex is such a METAPHOR FOR LIFE

Shamefully, I must admit that I never got over there to take a proper look. It’s very sad that it was demolished and feels needlessly wasteful. Park Hill in Sheffield was regenerated and still seems to be going strong (although admittedly somewhat gentrified).

I remember this. Unbelievably short sighted and sadly very typical of the approach taken to a lot of similar estates and architecture. A sort of muscular, anti-modernist philistinism.

Goldsmith juxtapositions. Lovely morning in the neighbourhood.

Congrats to Dr Phung and lovely to run into you on campus today Les. Always good to see you in SE London.

I feel like at that point he’d essentially given up on narrative cinema and was mainly making short internet films. Inland Empire feels like a feature length mash up of those. Astonishing, really, that it got a mainstream release. You can see why it was his final film.

Inland Empire deserves a nod too I think…

Me too! Hard to pick favourites, isn’t it? Eraserhead is right up there for sure, but top of the pile for me actually is Fire Walk With Me, the Twin Peaks movie. Dark and mesmeric and surreal… Lost Highway also brilliant and well represented musically last night I noticed.

Mick Harvey and co raising the spirit of David Lynch at the Royal Festival Hall this evening! Absolutely stunning gig…

No worries! Hope it all comes together.

Is Andy Burnham the answer to Labour’s woes? I’m sceptical, to be honest. He’s done great stuff in Manchester but won’t be able to do all the things that make him popular as PM…

In principle though I’m obviously all for more Northerners running the show 🤘 www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-...

Can I be of assistance finding a London venue? Goldsmiths might be an option if of interest but I also know loads of other places from my festival organising days. Drop me a DM if there’s anything useful I can do. No probs if not though, of course.

Nice one. I’ll get on it!
