The Old Sun Inn, Saffron Walden is a lovely old building, where you can hear M R James' only Christmas-set tale, "The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance", on Wed 10 Dec: www.ticketsource.co.uk/old-sun-inn/...

Also E F Benson's "How Fear Departed the Long Gallery" (which is the better story)

Excellent book. If you don't have it, you simply must.
28 October was the date in 1893 when M R James first read 2 ghost stories to The Chit-Chat Club in Cambridge. I have copies of a book for sale that commemorates this occasion and the supernatural output of other club members.
Interested in "Ghosts of the Chit-Chat" (HB or PB)? Then drop me a line.

Always great to talk to @jfmachin.bsky.social, this time about 'Stark Munro'. A very entertaining novel, but definitely something of a curate's egg. Looking forward to digging into his new anthology of Buchan's Strange Stories for @blpublishing.bsky.social which arrived yesterday.
NEW EPISODE: The Stark Munro Letters (1895), with @jfmachin.bsky.social, editor of the new Edinburgh University Press edition. Chat about: reading the book for the first time, Cullingworth-Budd, controversy and the original ending. Plus Buchan's weird tales. www.doingsofdoyle.com/2025/07/65-s...

Many thanks to Mark Jones and Paul Chapman for doing this interview but especially for reading the book so carefully- and obviously enjoying it. I seemed to be laughing pretty much throughout our conversation- a sign, I hope, that that it is entertaining. More of a constant giggle than a chortle.
