Forgot to promote #JoinIn this yr on the lead up to Christmas but really pleased that others have been more on the ball and kept this brilliant annual initiative of @sarahmillican.bsky.social on timelines.
This Christmas Day join us for #JoinIn on Bluesky. Just use or look for the #JoinIn hashtag. Lovely people coming together for chat and cheer - especially for those who may be alone or troubled at Christmas, or just looking for a bit of fellowship. See you there!

If you would like more cozy tales, I’m considering doing one a day. We could all use a treat.
Cozy winter story:
It’s early in the evening, but still quite dark—the winter solstice having just gone by. The bitter cold has broken, leaving the temperature hovering between freeze and thaw, but it’s a wet sort of evening, so you’ve lit a fire in the hearth. (Part 1)

I received a thank you from some library workers for this piece after a Chicago city budget was passed this week without the previously proposed library cuts I described here. Many thanks to everyone who made noise about this issue. There were wins and losses in this budget, but this win matters.
You Can’t Fight Fascism While Defunding Libraries

TIL the Salisbury steak was invented to be a scientific superfood. It even became a 19th century keto diet craze, though critics were not impressed:

"He promises to make women beautiful, with eyes like stars and skins like babies, so all the world will fall at their feet - the Salisbury Steak."
So, Salisbury Steak is actually super weird. Like, lock-men-in-a-room-and-force-them-to-eat-baked-beans weird.

NYT shows how Bari Weiss really screwed this up.

She didn't attend any of the 5 screenings of the story, which began on Dec. 12.

She only first weighed in on Thursday, and the show incorporated her suggestions.

She then waited until weekend to ask for more edits.

I'm not in a position to pick up The Dead Come to Stay until January, but I'll pass the discount code along for others. The first book was a great example of a cosy mystery. I look forward to reading the next one!
