People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

While I'm here... some of my favourites!

1) What Souls Are Made Of by Tasha Suri

This is a remix of Wuthering Heights which imagines the period after Heathcliff leaves the Heights (and Cathy is left there). It offers a different ending and explores the histories of South Asians in Britain.

Me taking my queer ass to my right-wing in-laws’ place for a brief masked Thanksgiving visit
I love this photo of a male ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) by Charles J. Sharp because it looks like it's mid-ballet. The 'danseur noble' takes the stage.

'Ocellated' is from Latin 'ocellus' meaning "little eye", referring to the eye-like spots on the tail feathers...

it is BANANAS how common this is, like *most* people I know who have got books with a big 5 seem to have experienced this, and it is totally dysfunctional
Maybe the hardest thing about being a 3x orphaned author (meaning all three of my books were acquired by editors who left the business before they could edit them) is that it means constantly starting over. The folks who read my books are wonderful! But in the industry, I have no long term supports

Seeing a job ad to be the engagement editor for the Paris Review and gleefully imagining the fun I could have in that role, in which I would be only briefly employed but a legend forever.

Would immediately add romance reviews and a column where we solicit guest writers to send in a limerick.

The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

OK, we're leaving the asbestos *in* the stuff women put on their faces? And, the powder we put on kids' bums? Check!

Huh, some chick scientist says, “It only takes a single asbestos fiber lodged in the lungs to cause mesothelioma decades later.”

What me, worry?

Most publishers (there are always exceptions) decide whether or not to buy a second book (or a third etc) based on how the previous book did. So when you pirate a book in most cases it’s less about the money you just stole from both author and publisher it’s about the future book you just killed.

I get boycotting Amazon. I think we should, but quote-skeeting disabled, BIPOC, and/or queer folks who are showing their books for sale on Amazon with ZERO intention of promoting their non-Zon wares, you're being part of another problem.

Maybe share alternate links instead of shouting them down?

And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.
