Sickle Cell Doc and hematologist fighting for our warriors, locally and globally

In honor of #SickleCellAwareness Month, I want to highlight this paper in JAMA Peds: the faster children w/acute SCD pain receive opioids in the ED, the more likely they are to be discharged home. Dose 1 in <1 hr + dose 2 <30 min later = ~40% lower odds of admission!

Opioid Timeliness in the Emergency Department and Hospitalizations for Acute Sickle Cell Pain
This cross-sectional study investigates if timely administration of opioids in the emergency department is associated with hospitalization for sickle cell disease pain.

75 years after the discovery of HbSC type #SickleCellDisease, the field finally has a mouse model to advance care for millions of people with this disease around the world

Very proud to be a part of the @cincychildrenscbdi.bsky.social #sicklecell center

A novel mouse model of hemoglobin SC disease reveals mechanisms underlying beneficial effects of hydroxyurea - PubMed
Sickle cell hemoglobin C (HbSC) disease results from compound heterozygosity of hemoglobin S (HbS) and hemoglobin C (HbC), comprising 30% of sickle cell disease (SCD). HbC induces red blood cell (RBC)...

Does anyone out there have any recommendations on a good course for the mandatory 8 hour DEA training for license renewal? Ideally a course that will help me to take better care of people in pain #meded #chronicpain #sicklecell

One step forward, no steps backwards

Now more than ever, we need good institutional and interpersonal leadership to avoid back sliding for #sicklecellwarriors and equitable care for all patients

This is a pep talk to myself as much as to the rest of us

I’ve cared for infants who stopped breathing w/ pertussis.

School aged kids who died of flu or COVID.

And many of my patients can’t be vaccinated because they’re on chemotherapy or are immune compromised.

Vaccinations save lives of those who get them & those who cannot.

It’s that simple.

☀️ Awaken your inner poet and write your best haiku about #ASH24 or #hematology! That's 3 lines in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

Post now through Tuesday afternoon and include #ASHaiku. You might get included in a highlights post!

🛑Remember, there's only one H in #ASHaiku!

CMS is considering the adoption of ASH’s quality measure assessing timely pain treatment in the ED for patients w/ #SickleCell. Comment to support inclusion in the Hospital Outpatient & Rural Emergency Hospital Quality Reporting Programs.

Grateful that our amazing community of leaders has decided to raise money and collect coats for our #sicklecellwarriors this year! 🙏🏽

Thank you @DorisDukeFdn for this beautifully written article and for supporting the care of children with #sicklecell globally

I'm honored to be a part of the team. Let's do this!

"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth"

We had a great talk at our weekly #sicklecell meeting by one of our #socialworkers on trauma-informed care. I love this powerful African proverb she shared. Support and stability are crucial

My mom- a lovely Black woman in her goldengirl years- is volunteering today as a poll worker in Florida

I'm so proud of her, but sadly I'm also pretty nervous for her safety. This is America.

Send good vibes, and thank a poll worker if you're voting in-person today!

My first #NIHLRP payment just came through! Pediatric hematology isn't a field you go into for the money. We get toddler drawings, teen fist bumps, and parent hugs 🥰

So I'm grateful for this loan repayment support while I research ways to help more #sicklecellwarriors

#Sicklecellwarriors, how have your experiences w/ physical therapy been? PTs, have you felt you didnt have the tools to help #sicklecell pain?

Unsurprisingly, the data on PT interventions for SCD are sparse. @BenReaderPT is going to change that!

In school, I won the #MLKJr award for #communityservice for doing the same volunteering as everyone else. I was so proud.

Yes, I was one of the few Black students at my school

So many of us have been the tokens for superficial #diversity efforts. Real #DEI requires deeper work

Honored to be included in hearing how these brilliant researchers from Uganda, Kenya, Angola, DR Congo, and the USA will continue doing research to improve sickle cell care in Africa

"Very encouraged to see someone of color here"

A pt's mom passed me this note. I thought it would be something she wanted to discuss privately

I recently helped my 1st patient from fellowship transition from pediatric to adult care.

My voice shook as I told him that he'll be in good hands. Fortunately we have a good relationship with our nearby adult medicine colleagues

Adult world, take care of our young adults!
