With that in mind, copying a slot from one Action to another is less well-defined. Do you copy those layers and strips that animate that slot? What if they animate other slots as well, does that animation data get copied too? What happens with strips on the same layer, that don't animate that slot?

The thing is, slots don't contain the animation data. They are just labels. In a future version of Blender you'll have multiple layers that can contain animation for a single slot. Or even strips on those layers, each animating the same (or different) slots.

This is for Blender add-on devs: the Action API that was deprecated in Blender 4.4 has been removed in 5.0.

Using action.fcurves / .groups / .id_root will NOT work in 5.0!
