Today I must wish a happy birthday to two of my favorite ladies. Eileen Collins and Nicole Stott are two of America's most valued astronauts and we are fortunate for their contributions.

If you are interested in the mission architecture behind the Artemis program, this article is useful. My personal opinion is that the program would benefit from a much simpler architecture, even if that means a landing vehicle smaller or less impressive than Starship.

Over the next week, it looks like I will have 12 hours of the American Revolution series to watch as well as an Apollo 13 podcast. Plus, I will attend two talks at my current academic home (Georgia Gwinnett College). So much to do and so little time.

In July 1969, there "were a bunch of guys about to turn blue." Four months later, there were "a couple of cardiac arrests down here." A few months after that, there were people depriving themselves of rest to bring a crippled Apollo 13 spacecraft home. Such was life in mission control.

I have now finished Gen. Wesley Clark's Great Courses series. Some viewers might object to his opinions about the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, but overall he has offered a trove of useful insights into 250 years of military history.

Pleased to recognize Veterans Day at my local YMCA. This year has been a great time of learning about veterans for me, from reading books on Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps history, to watching a Great Courses series hosted by Gen. Wesley Clark, to visiting the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.

I just watched the first episode of this two-part series. It did a great job of refreshing my memory on the installation of the Destiny module in 2001 and the EVA performed by Mike Fincke and Gennady Padalka in 2004.

Today marks a quarter of a century with at least one human being occupying the International Space Station. I am reminded of what my friend Greg Chamitoff, a former astronaut, wrote in the book pictured below: "The daily mission is a huge team effort."

Every year on this day, I remember the one person with whom I am most honored to share a birthday. Michael Collins was one of the greatest storytellers of Apollo, and especially because I am a spaceflight historian who aims to communicate the experience, I believe I owe him a debt of gratitude.
#ASEspotlight: Michael Collins 🌠

On July 18, 1966, ASE member Michael Collins enjoyed a breakfast of steak and eggs before the launch of Gemini 10.

Fun fact: He enjoyed playing handball!

Today, we remember Mike on his 95th birthday. ✨

Of the three members of the Apollo 11 moon landing crew, ironically two of them have written books entitled Mission to Mars. Michael Collins's is from 1990 and Buzz Aldrin's is from 2013. One might call that a link between two movies we have done for #HATM: First Man and The Martian.

I do not recall the movie making any reference to radiation exposure for Watney or his crewmates aboard the Hermes. How would this affect the astronauts?

The term "steely eyed missile man" in this movie is a reference to NASA flight controller John Aaron. He is the one who made that amazing call during the launch of Apollo 12 in 1969. I saw him in Tulsa, Oklahoma this year.

Watney just asked "How did the launch go?" from space after a terrible accident. That reminds me of a real life moment from 2015, when astronaut Scott Kelly found out about a failed Falcon launch intended to send a Dragon resupply spacecraft to the ISS where he was.
