History Instructor at Georgia Gwinnett College and author of book on history of astronaut training.
Pleased to recognize Veterans Day at my local YMCA. This year has been a great time of learning about veterans for me, from reading books on Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps history, to watching a Great Courses series hosted by Gen. Wesley Clark, to visiting the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.

Today marks a quarter of a century with at least one human being occupying the International Space Station. I am reminded of what my friend Greg Chamitoff, a former astronaut, wrote in the book pictured below: "The daily mission is a huge team effort."

Pleased to support one of my students who is playing for the Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team in their inaugural season.

I had the great pleasure of visiting the Naval Academy last month. Anybody who walks across this campus must know they are following in the footsteps of legendary figures. Yesterday this institution hosted Jim Lovell's private memorial service and burial.

Happy birthday in heaven, John. More than half a century has now passed since your Apollo 16 mission, but the crewed lunar exploration that you envisioned and advocated for is closer now than it has been at any point in this twenty-first century.

I just attended a 30th anniversary screening of Apollo 13 at an IMAX in Buford, Georgia. The movie teaches us a vital lesson for 2025: that when we pull in a common direction and sacrifice some of our comfort with other people in mind, we can solve enormous problems.

I saw this in downtown Annapolis, MD today.

24 years after the most tragic day in modern American history, we must remember the words of Port Authority officer Will Jimeno: "I saw a lot of love that day." What are we doing to care for each other during the 2020s, as Americans and crewmembers of Spaceship Earth?

I enjoyed visiting Mercedes-Benz Stadium and especially appreciated this display on girls flag football. I am glad the Falcons support girls and women in sports.

Pleased to explore the city of Atlanta this weekend, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth home and community, an Atlanta Braves game, and an Atlanta Falcons game (the first NFL game I have ever attended).

I visited the Gemini VIII spacecraft during my trip to Wapakoneta, Ohio this summer and realize now that one of the crewmen, Dave Scott, is the earliest flown U.S. astronaut still living. Only he and Buzz Aldrin can still tell us about flying in this vehicle.

One of my students from Lamar University last year sent me this newspaper article. It turns out that an artist from Port Arthur, Texas produced a series of lithographs on Apollo 11 that went on display at the Beaumont Art Museum.

Pleased to have made my first trip to my new academic home today: Georgia Gwinnett College. Greetings from Lawrenceville, GA!

I am now back in Iowa, but have a newfound appreciation for Ohio after my trip. Here are the signatures I obtained at the 2025 Summer Moon Festival in Wapakoneta (left) and the John Glenn shirt I bought in New Concord.

The next three stops of my trip have come in Cleveland, Ohio. What a great pleasure it was to take in the International Women's Air and Space Museum, the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, and the USS Cod Submarine!

What is your favorite moment from NFL history? I was able to visit Canton, Ohio today, just one week before the 2025 Hall of Fame game, and reflect on more than a century of memories. Make sure to visit this museum if you have the chance.

One of my favorite parts of this trip was the John and Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord, Ohio. The world is in need of more people who share not only the talents but also the values of these two Americans. I also visited the First Ladies National Historic Site in Canton.

Today I made my first trip to West Virginia. The town of Moundsville, pictured here, allows us to take in the accomplishments of the Adena people prior to the beginning of the Christian era.

What do you believe is the best aviation museum? The U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton is second only to the Smithsonian NASM, in my opinion. Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, and Al Worden were an all-Air Force crew and their vessel is the one on display in Dayton. So glad to make my first visit there today.

Of all the places to spend the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio has to be near the top of the list. I reflected on Neil Armstrong's life there today while also meeting Navy frogmen who participated in the Apollo 11 spacecraft recovery on July 24, 1969.

One year after my appearance on the #HATM podcast for The Right Stuff, I made my first trip to Mitchell, Indiana today. What a pleasure it was to pay homage to Gus Grissom and his Molly Brown spacecraft (pictured here), while visiting cousin Steve Grissom at Gus's boyhood home (2nd and 3rd photos).

Recently I learned that one of the most dynamic leaders of the women's suffrage movement in the nineteenth and early twentieth century U.S. grew up in Charles City, Iowa. Today I went with a church group to tour the home where Carrie Chapman Catt spent her early years. I highly recommend the trip.

Today is Andrew Chaikin's birthday! I can still see myself in seventh grade reading this illustrated three volume edition of his masterpiece, A Man on the Moon. This is one of the reasons I became a spaceflight historian, without question.
