I’m happy that enough people are reading Moby Dick that I’ve had two conversations about it in as many days, but the fact that “but *why* is there so much whaling stuff tho?” was part of both really emphasized the media literacy issue for me

Of all the incredible inversions in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the dialogue about using a sad has-been as a villain to make the up-and-comer look strong leading into a plot that uses up-and-comers (Qualley,Butler,Sweeney) as villains to make the sad has-been look heroic absolutely top-shelf.

For the “Ferris is a jerk, actually“ crowd:

He is an expression of Cameron’s superego, & this non-real nature is what empowers him to talk to us.

Further, Cameron is a projection of *us.* So Ferris is really talking to us about how we should have more confidence.

This is how movies work.

When Arcade Fire released this video 15 years ago, it was just a work of dystopian fiction.

Just watched it again for the first time in many years and it left a lump in my throat.

“Arbitrage” is a good thriller, but its final confrontation is one of the best examples of how the risk addiction driving billionaires works: 1 - the thing at risk is people’s actual lives, and 2 - these guys could give a shit about 1. They may act like they care, but that is just part of the game.

Just a reminder that we slept on Blonde, which is an insane, brutal masterpiece about how we suffocate beneath the false outward images of self we create to protect us from the world - and then feed off others who have died under that same crushing weight. We are eating ourselves. #filmsky

Why are Trump and Vance lying about what happened? “….They’d stick to the truth if they thought the truth was enough. And so I think they are showing by their actions that they ALSO don’t believe the shooting was justified - otherwise they wouldn’t be lying.”

I’m a few episodes into Tencent’s adaptation of The Three Body Problem on Tubi and it is 10x better and 100x cheaper than the Netflix version.

If this is another New Yorker review that intellectualizes why people’s feelings about a pop movie are less valid than their well-read smartypants feelings, I may just have to go get a pint of ice cream, watch Titanic, and cry the night away with a smile, forever thankful for my blessed basic-ness.
There is “inherent kitsch in reducing one of the richest, most intellectually prismatic works in English literature to an instrument of healing,” Justin Chang writes. “What is ‘Hamnet,’ or ‘Hamlet,’ without a little ham?” Read his full review of the film: newyorkermag.visitlink.me/4LfyMu

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a solid souls-lite with gorgeous environments, but the standout is the really terrific writing and voice acting. Glad I didn’t sleep on this one.

Today is a great day for us to ask ourselves “as an individual, how have I made small, selfish choices that might be egoically satisfying in the moment, but have collectively added up to violence and division?” and maybe see, just for fun, what happens if we don’t do those things
