The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator.

But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.

So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term.
This is absolutely horrific. Immigration detention is at a crisis point under this Admin.

I will be demanding information from DHS on Mr. Campos’ death as well as a lack of detention oversight.

The Admin’s current detention scheme is dangerous and will result in more deaths.

I am traveling to Denmark as part of a bipartisan, bicameral congressional delegation. Denmark is a strong partner of the U.S., and this bipartisan CODEL reiterates that the U.S. Congress stands firm in our partnership, despite the President’s unnecessary and dangerous advances towards Greenland.

A bipartisan group of colleagues and I met with Nobel Peace Prize winner, María Corina Machado, to ask her about how she sees her homeland now that Maduro has been removed. Machado is as determined as ever to see a better future for the Venezuelan people. She has my continued admiration and support.

I joined @duckworth.senate.gov, @peters.senate.gov, and @slotkin.senate.gov to send a letter to OMB Director Russ Vought demanding OMB end its administrative review of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project. Any further delays to this project put the Great Lakes’ ecosystem and fishing industry at risk.

I joined my colleague Senator Britt to send a letter to the CDC urging them to research the impacts of gambling on children. As sports gambling proliferates across the U.S., we must ensure we protect kids.

Millions of Americans use dietary supplements to improve their health. However, FDA doesn’t have basic information about most of these products. I introduced the Dietary Supplement Listing Act to help increase transparency and ensure these products are safe.

BREAKING: My bipartisan legislation with Senator Fischer to help protect kids with food allergies was just signed into law.

This bill will give parents the peace of mind knowing more staff will be trained to PREVENT and PROTECT their children from an allergic reaction at school.

Senate Republicans voted against a resolution that would require Congressional approval before Trump engages us in further hostilities with Venezuela.

We cannot allow this conflict to escalate at the expense of American lives. Sadly, the majority of my Senate Republican colleagues don’t agree.

Today, I met with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to discuss federal reimbursement for MWRD’s work on the Thornton Reservoir. I will continue to push for this reimbursement and to offer the resources MWRD needs to keep our state’s water infrastructure up and running.

I’m always ready to engage in oversight.

I could ask many questions of a Trump official responsible for vetting immigrants.

Why won’t Republicans call one?
Republicans are holding an anti-immigrant hearing right now on vetting refugees.

Small detail: They failed to call any Trump Administration witness responsible for vetting refugees.

Entirely performative.

NEWS: @schumer.senate.gov just attempted to pass a bill that would extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits and prevent insurance prices from doubling for 22 million Americans. Even though this bill passed the House with 17 Republican votes, Senate Republicans still blocked it.

This week, the Illinois National Guard began its partnership with the Portuguese Armed Forces through the State Partnership Program.

I supported this agreement, as the ILNG has long exemplified the “Gold Standard” in partnership initiatives, strengthening both international security & cooperation.

President Trump’s war on drugs will take more than a new President in Venezuela. Last night’s termination of addiction treatment is a step backwards that will cost lives.

His cuts show this Admin is more interested in building White House ballrooms than life-saving clinics.

Still no response. We know the answer.

Lowered standards. Weakened vetting.

Secretary Noem is opening the door to extremists and the unqualified.
BREAKING: Per new reporting, ICE recruits have shown up to training without full vetting under Kristi Noem. One was discovered to have a history of robbery and battery related to domestic violence while already in training.

I met with Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng to discuss many shared interests and areas of disagreement between the U.S. and China.

I commend Ambassador Xie for his willingness to discuss these issues with me, and I hope China can help bring an end to the war in Ukraine and ease tensions in the SCS.

America could restore its leadership on human rights and right past wrongs.

Instead, the Trump Administration is expanding Guantánamo Bay to unjustly and inhumanely detain migrants.

We have to close it once and for all.

At last month’s Cabinet meeting, Trump publicly called Somali immigrants “garbage.”

Now, his Administration is terminating Somalia’s designation for Temporary Protected Status.

Does the President really think Somalia is a safe or stable place for these individuals to return? I think not.
January 13, 2026 at 9:35 PM
@duckworth.senate.gov and I introduced an amendment to the government funding bill to reverse the President’s proposed budget cut to the Chicago Harbor Lock, one of America’s busiest locks. A lock this large must have the critical resources it needs to run its operations.

Today, President Trump endorsed my bipartisan Credit Card Competition Act, which would reduce credit card swipe fees and hold down costs for Main Street merchants and their customers. Americans struggling with everyday purchases like groceries and gas need the relief this bill would provide.

🚨BIG NEWS: This is the moment the Senate passed my bill to combat nonconsensual, sexually-explicit deepfakes.

Grok is out of control. AI can’t be unregulated.

I teamed up with @ocasio-cortez.house.gov to stand up for victims who’ve had their autonomy taken from them by AI.

Let’s get it done.

Some exciting news.

The Senate just unanimously passed my bill to combat nonconsensual, sexually-explicit deepfake images!

Survivors deserve to have their day in court.

To my House colleagues: let’s get this done.

The video from the shooting of Renee Good directly contradicts the self-defense narrative that DHS and President Trump have attempted to spin. DHS and DOJ must cooperate with state and local officials to hold a full, transparent investigation into her shooting now.

The first detainees arrived at Guantánamo Bay twenty-four years ago.

The prison at GTMO is a stain on our nation’s history—and it’s time we close it once and for all.

Read my letter to the Chicago Tribune about the horrific shooting of Renee Good and the Trump Administration’s reign of terror here:
Letters: A federal agent killed a woman in Minnesota. The reign of terror on America is a disgrace.
What happened in Minneapolis last week was an unacceptable tragedy.
