Dropped my first newsletter of the year at fan/work. Talked about some amazing experiences and the lessons I've learned over the past year, and why the best part of fandom (creativity and community) needs tending.

Fandom is still about community.
The one lesson I learned about being in fandom in 2025 is that it's still all about people, belonging, creating, and community.

What do you call a fan who engages in more scholarly activities/pursuits? Fan studies has aca-fan but what's the counterpart to that? Fan-nerd?

Can folks in the Conclave fandom share their favorite fanwork/fan projects? I remember seeing a zine and a video game? And I just want to learn more because the part of me that was born and raised Catholic is so intrigued by the fact that this movie has a passionate fanbase.

I'm always fascinated by what people can create because of fandom. I did an interview with two admins of the Blooms Run Club last year (a fan-run running club from members of the Philippine pop group BINI), and I'm happy that I can finally share this story. fanwork.beehiiv.com/p/when-fando...

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford Medicine have devised an influenza vaccine that prompts immunity to ALL four major flu subtypes AND shows potential against bird flu, indicating a significant advancement in flu prevention and a potential increase in vaccine efficacy. Let’s talk about that! 🧪🧵⬇️

Went to a more upper-class area recently and someone said to me, "I don't understand how this place could be 'high-end' but the sewage management is so bad."

Me, under my breath: Olfactory ethics.

I know BlueSky has a lot of folks that are conducting research, so I'm gonna ask for the network to help me out here. Is there anyone doing research on agency as a component of self-leadership or something along those lines? Would appreciate the help! #research #agency #selfleadership #leadership

I dislike that a chunk of idol or music fandom is people yelling "My cake is better than yours!" (as someone so eloquently summed it up for me) when I'm here eyes wide walking down a row of patisseries just staring at the treats and going "This exists?!", grinning and wiggling.

Recipe for disaster.

As global temperatures rise, food supplies are becoming less secure. So how do we ensure there will be enough for a growing population?

We can all start by taking climate change dead-seriously!

In this house, we love BINI fan art. I went to a concert for the PPop group BINI recently and got this bus ticket and stamp-like stickers from a fellow Bloom (that's what the BINI fans are called).

It's this laro energy that I found in the fandom that made me want to connect with people.

"Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?

Reskeeting a thread from last year about AI and fan practices (fanvidding vs. fanfiction) and my thoughts about language learning and use. This is something I am thinking about as I work on Chapter 6 in my book.
A few months back, a colleague messaged me a link to an AI generated mashup of Harry Potter and Guy Ritchie film clips and expressed excitement about learners creating their own fan fiction movies using AI. I replied in the affirmative but I was surprised by the use of fanfiction to refer to these.

What's the best new habit you picked up when you got older? I remember reading an intro to a fiction anthology where someone says they say, "I appreciate it," after saying 'Thank you,' and it's stuck with me ever since. I try to make sure to say those two things when I do feel happy and grateful.

We don’t have to repeat the mistakes of Twitter by following these outrage farmers when they come here. We can all just agree that these people universally suck and go about our lives without them in it. We don’t have to share “this person who sucks said another thing that sucks.” We can have peace!
every one of those op-ed columnists has spent years building up a follower list on twitter, many of whom left, and so they are angry because you owe them your attention ad to help them get paid, your entire existence is to facilitate their need to put in as little effort as possible, know your place
Step 1: Elon takes over Twitter, unbans and amplifies the worst white nationalist posters, methodically turns it into a right wing echo chamber.

Step 2: Users who aren’t white nationalists or MAGA extremists leave for Bluesky en masse.

Step 3: op-ed columnists fret, “is Bluesky an echo chamber?”

one of the reasons bluesky works differently is because early users waged a successful fight to get the devs to prioritize safety features to protect communities at risk

as a result bluesky now has a suite of controls that i think are unmatched on social media

here’s the list, lmk what i’ve missed
